My 5-year-old son loves this clock. He learned to tell time by reading digital clocks, but did not grasp analog time.
Pro: 1. It works like a real clock. You can only spin the minute hand to advance or reverse time. The hour hand can only move when you spin the minute hand. This is great for learning how time moves. 2. Good size for small hands - about 6 inches in diameter. 3. Has a removable stand in the back, and can be stored on the clock flat so you can store it in a drawer. Con: 1. The hour hand somehow lost its adjustment, so for example when the minute hand was at 45, the hour hand would already be advanced to the next hour. This is confusing to a child who is learning how to tell time. 2. The minute hand became loose. 3. The removable stand is a little loose. Final thoughts: I would recommend this clock because it's a great learning toy, but there are a few little problems with it.

Nice clock to use for teaching your child how to read time to the minute. Not wooden as a previous reviewer wrote. It is plastic with a stand to stand up or remove the stand to lay down. It is the smaller one pictures. There is no book with this, just the clock.

Clock Hands Must be Manually Moved,

This is a decent learning tool/toy and my daughter has spent a bit of time with the clock.
HOWEVER, the product description is so brief that a very important fact is omitted. The clock hands do not move on their own. The hands must be manually manipulated. Though the product description says, "Hidden gears maintain correct hour and minute relationships," these are only to keep the hands in sync so that as you MANUALLY move the minute hand, the hour hand will also move with it.

I got this because one of my children was having a hard time with learning to tell time on an analog clock. I really like it that the minute and hour hands are color-coded to the corresponding areas on the clock face. The hour hand is red and so are all the big numbers. The minute hand is blue and there is a blue ring around the hour numbers that show the minutes. That's great since one of the problems was remembering which hand went with hours or minutes.
The clock itself is smaller than I expected but it does state correctly in the description it is 5". I guess I let the picture look bigger than it was. :) This clock can take a lot of abuse and still work fine too. My toddler loves playing with this. *update* 2/19/2011 We still use this clock a lot. It's very handy to have around. I keep it in the top drawer (literally) of our school supplies so the kids can get to it easily if needed. After this time however, the minute hand doesn't keep track as accurately as does a real clock anymore. It's about 2 minutes or so off, which is frustrating when you're trying to teach accuracy. I probably just need to go get a screwdriver to tighten it in a bit but I haven't done that (yet.) Overall, I would still buy this again in a heartbeat. It's a great tool that my kids actually enjoy using.

As soon as we opened it, my 4 year old daughter was very excited. We started moving the minute hand to learn the time (and told her many times not to touch the hour hand, which she obeyed). Right away I noticed the hour hand is not moving exactly. For example, when it is 4 o'clock, the hour hand is almost at 4, but not quite. and 6 o'clock is definitely not a straight line. So I am returning this... Very disappointed. It would have been a great learning tool.

My son LOVES this clock. He is 2 yr old, and always wants to know what time it is. I got this clock for him, and we are starting to teach him how to read it. It is a great teaching tool, and durable enough for my son to play with at the same time.

As you turn the minute hand one full revolution, the hour hand auomatically advances one full hour. This really helps the child understand the relationship between minutes and hours. Also the Hands are color coded: red hour hand goes with red numbers, blue minute hand goes with blue numbers. If I were designing a teaching aid this is exactly what I woul design. I was expecting it to be bigger, but the size has proven to be completely adequate. Kids tend to want to push the red hand around, but the red hand is not made to be pushed. This has not yet broken the clock, though it seems like it could break it if a child continues pushing it around. (I think you are supposed to push the blue hand only.) I would definitely buy again.

I thought this was a great tool to supplement learning to tell time and to understand the passage of time. My autistic son was having trouble understanding the passage of minutes and how that makes the hour change. This simple tool helped him get that immediately. Now when he is doing homework and comes across a time problem he can't figure, he independently goes and gets his clock to figure it out.

Well thought out, small red hand emphasizes hours in red, while blue hand goes with blue minutes around the clock. Very nice being able to show how the hour hand progresses by turning the minute hand. As noted, yes only move the minute hand, small hand is geared to follow. I think kids at first get a bit stuck on times that are say 50 minutes past the hour, as the small hand is closer to the next hour.. this clock demonstrates why the hour hand is where it is..
