The Good: Game features funny and interesting ways to develop important learning skills.

The Challenging: Too easy for older children.

In a Nutshell: Fun, electronic phone game that's packed with nine challenges and over 300 activity questions.

Designed for two players and up, this phone game asks kids over 300 educational and funny questions. View larger.

The player that feeds all their tokens to the Funny Phone first wins.

Learning Made Fun
Designed for two or more players, the Funny Phone is a good indoor activity for a small group. Picking up the receiver, kids dial up a number on the built-in directory shelf. Funny Phone is ready with funny sounds, maybe a joke, and always a new challenge. Sometimes a challenge is just for the caller, but usually it's an all-play challenge. With both individual and group questions, the challenges assist in teaching language and listening skills, as well as develop logical thinking and classification skills. Interacting in a group encourages kids to develop social skills, work together, and be creative.

Nine Challenges
Kids can play with Funny Phone at a table, or on the floor. To begin, simply pass out an equal number of tokens to all the players, and have the first player pick up the phone. The Funny Phone randomly shuffles through the different types of challenges, including games like Act Fast, where players have to guess what the caller is pretending to be before time runs out, and Sing-a-ling-a-ling, where you have to sing your answer. Other activities are Dizzy Doodle, Pick a Number, Say Something, Telephone Tongue Twister, Name Game, Rhyme Time, and Mystery Music.

Made with brightly colored, durable plastic, the Funny Phone holds up to countless hours of use, and also features an automatic shut-off, adjustable volume, and a break-away safety cord on the receiver.

Not Just About Winning
The objective of the game is to be the first player with no tokens, but Funny Phone is all about the process. With its many sounds and nudges to the funny bone, the Funny Phone will have kids playing and giggling with one another -- all while they're learning important skills. The challenges, such as Mystery Music, which has kids guessing the names of familiar tunes, are too easy for older children. But for younger children, even well-worn territory is still interesting and enjoyable with the Funny Phone.

What's in the Box

I would advise against getting this phone. It is not put together very well, e.g. the wire from the headset to the base does not have a good connection causing the voice output to go in and out, also when you hang up, the phone doesn't detect it most of the time (for game purposes) so you have to push it down with your hands. Overall, it just feels light and cheap. The games that it plays are more complicated than they should be as stated by a previous reviewer. You basically have to dial from a set of preset phone numbers after it prompts you and then follow the next sequence of instructions in order to get it work properly. If you press buttons or hang up out of sequence, then it'll either repeat the instructions or go mute. Without adult supervision, I doubt a 4-7 year old could figure it out.

Edit: If you plan on getting this phone as a fake phone for your kids....don't. They're smarter than you and will go for the real thing instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Most annoying toy ever!!, December 29, 2009
= Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Learning Resources Funny Phone Family Game (Toy)
Let me first say that I have 4 kids, so I've seen a LOT of toys in this household. Unfortunately, this annoying phone is one of them. I bought it based on the GREAT reviews I read here, thinking it would be fun for my 3 and 4 year old to play with. WRONG. Firstly, it comes with a bunch of punch-out cardboard coins that will inevitably get lost. -The "tray" that holds them slides open very easily. Exactly what parents want in a toy, a bunch of cardboard coins to lose all around the house. :)

In addition, if you don't dial the exact number, the phone keeps saying "try again" in the VERY annoying voice. And then it just plays a "dead" dial tone. Woo Hoo, now that's a fun toy!!

Save the $10 and buy something less incredibly annoying and frustrating for both parents and kids!!

This review is from: Learning Resources Funny Phone Family Game (Toy)
I think the toy has excellent educational value. I beg to differ with the seemingly impatient parents out there who felt the phone was too chatty, and complicated to use. I think this phone is wonderful in that it teaches children to listen carefully to directions, creates memory and organizational skills, and most important they must learn cooperation with this toy if they are playing in a group setting. This toy is excellent for families with children ranging in ages from non-readers to adult. This toy is easily adaptable for large groups such as a small party or playgroup. At our house we have game-night, but have so few family games that are adaptable for the youngest who isn't reading yet, but wants very much to be able to play a game with everyone. This is something the whole family can play together, but the youngest gets to be the star...that is if the older players are patient and up for going along with the fun. I do have to admit I had to return my first phone because it did not work...it seemed to have an electronic problem, but we've had no problems with our second. It seems sturdy enough, and yes, there are alot of little cardboard tokens/chips. But if you teach the children to keep them in their storage compartment, all is fine. To sum it up, this is a very fun game for children, it can be fun for adults too if they see the skills it teaches, and with the special pricing on-line is quite reasonably priced for a toy of the genre.
