This toy can be used by babies and toddlers and up. Younger kids can use it simply as a pretend phone. When certain buttons are pressed there is a dial tone sound, a ringing sound, and a "busy signal" sound. My youngest was one year old when he began playing with this, randomly pressing buttons, listening, and really pretending to talk.
Older kids (5 or maybe 4) can use this as a teaching tool, with the parent. As described by the manufacturer (above) this has the capability to program in numbers, record your voice, and practice calling 911 or practice calling other important phone numbers.
So far we've only used the toy to play with during imaginative play. My kids have played with it so much that it is worth the cost. Kids who visit for playdates also gravitate to this toy and love to play with it. I highly recommend this as a great toy for pretend play.
Also great from this manufacturer is the pretend cash register.

My son has autism, so I am constantly on the lookout for toys that will help him in everyday task. The phone is FANTASTIC! In only two day, he got the hang of the phone and learned his home phone number! The kicker was for praise, he heard mommy's voice saying, he got it right! No mechanical, strange voices! Good Job! Great Product!

It's a good product. A big limitation is that it can only leave one message to one phone number. If you want to change the message or the number you can do it, but the old message or number are erased. It seems pretty indestructible though.

For those that lost their instruction manual and are looking online, you may not find instructions.

Here is how to program a number:
Turn on and pick up the receiver
Press and hold the Program button while doing...
Press the # key
Press in the telephone number
Release the Program button
Press the # key again
Hang up the receiver

Here is how the record a message:
Turn on and take the receiver off the hook
Press and hold the record button and the program button
After you hear a beep, start recording your message (second beeps indicate the end of the recording time)
Release both buttons
Hang up the receiver
Verify by dialing the programmed number.

I purchased the phone for my 5 year old and she loved it, she learned my cell phone number the first day she used it. And what she really loves is the recording of me when she dials the number correctly. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone with small children who have difficulty learning phone numbers.

Too bad that after they learn to dial their own telephone number, and hear a recording that either you or your child recorded, they quickly lose interest in playing with the phone. I just recommend this phone if you are interested in teaching your child to dial their own phone number or 911. The playback after you record the message is pretty clear for a play phone. Too bad you can only record one message associated with only one phone number at a time. If you want them to learn another number, you would have to erase the first one, then record another message and number.

I bought this phone for my son when he turned 1, he is now 5 and he still loves this toy. My husband is in the Navy, so when he would be deployed we recorded hisvoice so my son could hear it. I now have a 1 year old daughter who also enjoys the toy. My son now records his voice on it to make his sister laugh. It was one of my best toy purchases.

I own and operate a daycare and although the toddlers in my care are only 2 the phone has been a great hit. For them it's a great introduction into phone manners, 911 info and number recognition.

This phone has been a valuable resource for my 5-year-old who now knows our home number and my cell number thanks to the phone. Aside from the learning aspect, there are also fun prerecorded messages for pretend. My only complaint is the volume control stopped working and it is now stuck on the absolute loudest setting - which is quite loud. The quietest setting was even a bit loud.
