When my teenage children were younger I bought them pretend checkbooks by ParentBanc and used them for their allowance. Now that my other two are ages 7 and 10, I wanted to do the same with them, to teach them the concept of checks and help them learn to manage their money. I have not been able to find the ParentBanc checks, but I did find this set, which looked to be really nice, so I ordered them (although I feel they are overpriced). I was disappointed to find that the check register is simply two connected sheets printed on front and back, the checkbook doesn't have a cardboard backing to slide into the checkbook cover. I guess my expectations were high because the ParentBanc brand was so much nicer and more like the real deal. Also, I ordered two sets and the pen doesn't work in either set. I gave my kids a real check register and another pen, so these serve the purpose for their allowance, but for $15 per set, I really expected better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great way to help children understand money., January 9, 2007
This review is from: Learning Resources Pretend and Play Checkbook with Calculator (Toy)
I got this for my oldest three children ages 11, 8, and 7 as a gift from Santa along with an opening "balance". The children loved the idea of having to write checks and now when they want something they can write their "bankers"(aka Mom and Dad) a check and we will buy it. So they are learning that once it's spent its gone, so are trying to decide should they save or spend. Since they have no actual money its not burning holes in pockets or getting lost. They are actually thinking about diffrent things and when we say get your check book the re-think the decision about wheather they really want it or not. I'm hoping it not only keeps them from "borrowing" from one another but make sure they really want what they buy, so it's not stuck in the toy chest within the week.
Would have given more stars but it's to early to tell how this will work in the long run.

This is a great idea for helping kids understand money and how to manage it. It's a great life skill and even if kids aren't going to have their own checkbook for a number of years it's a good life skill to learn. Plus it makes them feel more grownup to have a checkbook like mom and dad!

This item was an excellent choice for my 7 year old daughter! She plays store and house and this went right along with that. Also it teachers her about balancing and addition and subtraction! We loved this product.I would definately recommend it to anyone with children who have a great imagination!

I purchased this item to not only teach my son how to use a checkbook and checks but allow him to spend 'reward' points for his good behavior and it is working like a charm. He trades his check for cash, special toys and/or outings. As a special ed. student it was VERY VERY useful and educational.

4.0 out of 5 stars Opinion of Learning Resources Pretend & Play Checkbook w/calculator, January 7, 2009

My daughter who is almost 5 yrs old was so excited to receive her own checkbook! She watches me when I pay bills and asks for checks so she can "pay bills" too. I used to give her deposit slips to use as her checks but she was much more excited to receive her own check book with cover and register. She enjoys playing make-believe and it helps when the toys are more realistic. I only wish that it included more checks because these won't last too long.

My girls love these check books. They were always asking me if they could have some of mine. So, when I saw these, I was very excited. They carry them in their purse, and even record the checks they have written in the register. I recommend these to parents. Only one caution - the checkbook cover can peel.
