Book Description

Women's Action Alliance Series February 1, 1992
Written for educators, researchers, and others who are concerned about the school and family needs of children of single parents, this book reviews demographic information and research findings published through the late 1980s, based on a research project conducted by Women's Action Alliance on a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. A comprehensive statistical profile of single-parent families reveals significant differences along different types of such families: never married, separated, divorced, and widowed. The author summarizes the home life and school life for one-parent children and presents a variety of types of assistance.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Nearly a quarter of all households in the United States are single-parent families. A research study performed by the Women's Action Alliance revealed that there is a serious educational gap between the children of single-parent and two-parent families. This book offers timely information for single parents, their children, and their children's educators by identifying how home life affects school performance and recommending strategies which might prevent children from falling behind academically. These strategies include increased sensitivity toward the children, better family support, and more parental involvement with teachers and school. Good graphs and appendixes are provided along with the text. However, the study is rather short--so the $20 price tag for only 86 pages (plus reference) is a bit high.
