5.0 out of 5 stars THE Book on Classroom Drama! Extremely Useful!!! September 7, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Let me be clear, if you are interested in teaching drama at the elementary level (K-6) THIS IS YOUR BIBLE.
If you are interested in arts integration, and how to use drama techniques to explore curriculum, THIS IS YOUR BIBLE.

I just got a new job teaching drama to children in classrooms, K-2, and have been ordering every book I could find. The thing is, there aren't many drama books at the elementary level, because there aren't many elementary drama programs.

David Farmer steps up and delivers THE book on the subject. This is the best combination of theory vs. activity ideas, and delivers an unbelievable array of drama strategies to use in the classroom. He lists them by category, and by grade level (in UK grade levels, but they are easily translated) and then gives you multiple examples on how to use each strategy in different subject areas/stories/lessons/genres.

If I only got this book to help me with lesson planning for this new job I would have been FINE.

He then goes on to assemble these strategies into three full lessons (could be considered units) at the end of the book so you can see how he would use each strategy over the course of a few weeks to explore a book, fairy tale, or historical period. (and yes, the three lessons/units are designed for different grade levels) Reading over these units, you get a full sense of how to put the activities and strategies into use in your curriculum in meaningful ways. When I read the units, my mind was blown. NEVER has anyone laid it out so clearly and in such a USEFUL way.

I do not usually rave about teaching books, but I have to say, so far this is as good as it gets, and sets the standard very high for any books on drama in the elementary level classroom. Bravo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!!! May 2, 2012

Learning Through Drama - in the Primary Years has been a tremendous help. I especially love the theater games which serves as pre-lessons before the actual lessons. I am currently teaching my students about storytelling and chapter 10 has been a great guide as I embark on this journey. Mr. Farmer keep up the great work!!!

I`m teaching drama to students of social working. I`m really glad to have found these 3 books from David Farmer; not too much theory, but nevertheless clear in the aims and consequences of exercices.

Very good for all teachers or workers with children and adults
