5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful weekend read!
What a great story for dog lover's! I think I finally understand how obedience titles are awarded. Miss Conant draws the reader into the cozy Cambridge world and successfully portrays the unusual relationships that often form in dog training classes. 3.0 out of 5 stars Ambivilent
This is the first in the series and it has some good aspects to it, but only if you are truly a dog lover. I mean even enjoying watching the dog shows. The book is not the best mystery and often reads like a dog manual. It lets you in on the background of dog shows, obedience classes and animal behavior. It also, unfortunately, has a tendency to be preachy about the care...

What a great story for dog lover's! I think I finally understand how obedience titles are awarded. Miss Conant draws the reader into the cozy Cambridge world and successfully portrays the unusual relationships that often form in dog training classes. People from such diverse backgrounds join together with one thing in common - a love of dogs! She accurately depicts some of the eccentric and frankly, zany personalities one finds in the dog show world. Her relationship with her vet adds further intersting and romantic plot direction. Her insights into how we all cope with the loss of our best friends were very touching. I enjoyed the book immensely and look forward to reading others in her series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ms. Conant has done extremely well!, April 21, 1998
This review is from: A New Leash on Death (Paperback)
Hoving spent as much times at shows as I have, her knowledge leads one to believe she has as well! Her people and animal companions come alive and she obviously has a love for dogs that that only a true "dog person" has. I have read all of her series, but this one holds a special place in my heart. A must read for any dog lover as well as mystery buff!

4.0 out of 5 stars Truly "going to the dogs"...., March 9, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: A New Leash on Death (Paperback)
This is the first in Susan Conant's highly successful series about "detective" Holly Winter - dog magazine columnist, and Alaskan Malamute fancier. In this series opener, a fellow member of the main character's obedience class is murdered with his own dog's leash. The orphaned dog helps Holly to dig up clues to the crime that "cuts to the bone with betrayal." Easy reading full of knowledgable "insider" information about the dog scene

4.0 out of 5 stars I think an auspicious beginning to a dog lovers' series., July 1, 2006
This review is from: A New Leash on Death (Paperback)
I really enjoy "The Cat Who" series as well as "Sneaky Pie Brown", but as much as I enjoy cats, I love dogs far more. Dogs have always been a part of my life, so I could hardly wait to begin this series. This first book did not disappoint. Ms. Conant knows the dog world, and she writes a pretty good story too. In this book Holly sets out to find out who strangled a fellow dog club member at one of their Thursday night training sessions at the old armouries. I like Holly Winter too. And her Rowdy is a gem. Anyway, I look forward to reading of their adventures in subsequent books.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best books in the series, February 26, 2007
This review is from: A New Leash on Death (Paperback)
if not the best. Ms. Conant stays on topic without the rambling that characterizes her later books. Her descriptions of dogs are spot on. Her descriptions of people are true and unstereotyped. She's written a nice mystery with a workable if not too surprising plot. The gem in this is the obedience club setting, the dogs and the main characters, the dog loving Holly, Kevin the burly cop, Rita, her psychologist tenant, and the whole Cambridge dog training club. Conant writes about dogs and dog people with freshness and telling familiarity. You will see your own dogs in hers, and enjoy the book all the more for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for dog and cozy lovers, July 23, 2011
This review is from: A New Leash on Death (Beeler Large Print Mystery Series) (Hardcover)
I finshed this most welcomed book by Susan Conant. For quite some time I have been wishing for an intelligent and interesting series with dogs...lots and lots of dogs. And not just pure bred dogs...rescues, mixed-the whole nine yards.

Thank-you Susan conant for listening and answering dog lovers and lovers of cozies.
This was a wonderful way to begin new series for me that almost ended with me having tears in my eyes. For a good reason not a bad one.

This wonderful mystery centers on Rowdy, a magnificent malamute that enters Holly winters life from who knows where. And that's the mystery. Where and from whom did Rowdy come from and why is Rowdy's original owner a mystery?

Then we have the training sessions at the armory. The armory is big enough for all the dogs to train and be judged...then it also becomes big enough for the murder of Dr. Stanton.

The author included a romance between Holly and Steve (Vetinarian) who unearth clues to the murder by deligently searching for Rowdy's original owner. It all slowly links together.

Characters: Holly Winter-Current owner of Rowdy and columnist for Dog's Life.
Rowdy-orphaned Malamute, cared for by Holly.
Steve-Holly's romantic partner and Vet.
Dr. Stanton-trainer par excellence of dogs & replacement of Margaret
Robichaud.
Roger-Dr. Stanton's nephew

I highly reccomend this wonderful book to any animal lovers and lovers of cozy mysteries. It has a little bit of everything-romance, mystery and a bit of humor. The one element that this book has that all the other mysteries I've read doesn't have is information/education on dogs for dog owners. I found so many interesting elements that I could compare to my own dogs.
My one request...Susan Conant please let me know when you write a mystery with Dachshunds in it.

Ellen

I liked this easy read for the beach! Susan Conant, the author, is really funny. Combine that with a little romance and a little mystery and you have the makings of a fun book. I plan to buy the entire series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-done - a fun adventure for all, not just dog lovers, December 23, 2011
This was my first Susan Conant book and I really enjoyed it. She kept me guessing throughout, but also taught me a lot about the world of show dogs and dog training. I felt like her lead character was a friend of mine by the time I finished the story. You don't have to be enamored with dogs to enjoy the mystery and the twists and a satisfying ending. I'll read more by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thrilled to see this book in Kindle format!, November 21, 2011

If you love dogs, especially those with strong personalities and strength-of-character, this book is for you. As the former owner of a Minature Schnauzer, I am in love with dogs who have strong personalities and think for themselves. Training such animals can be trying, yet hysterically funny in retrospect. Evidently, Malamutes fall into this category, which has lead me to fall in love with the breed. They are as loving as any dog should be, but believe strongly in doing things their way. While this can be frustrating in real life, Ms. Conant's dog lover mystery series catches the sweetness and frustrating moments with humor, which I always appreciate.

I read the book when it first came out and have been begging Amazon to release it in Kindle format...THANK YOU for doing so. I appreciated learning the detail of dog shows, getting introduced to the characters, and quickly fell in love with Rowdy. I noticed that other reviewers were not happy with the show detail - that will ease up in the following books in the series, so keep reading. I also loved the newly updated Forward by Ms. Conant and appreciate that, while tempted, she did not alter the book to any appreciable degree. Even though this is set in fairly modern times, it is amazing to think that such a short time ago, we did not have the WWW, cell phones, etc and is quickly becoming a period piece because of the amazing advances in modern technology.
