Product Description

About our Natural Undyed Veg Tan Cowhide Splits:

* In the tanning process, when veg tan topgrain sides are processed, the underpart of the side (known as the split) is separated and sold separately. Grainy on both sides (but still tools nicely); sides are medium weight (ranging approximately between 4 to 5 ounce) with pleasantly firm hand. You can gauge dimensions by 12 inch ruler and coffee cup in picture.

* Each piece is 2 SF; they are a natural light tan color, and are relatively even in thickness and consistency for splits. A lot of great leather for the money... Costs way more on the open market, if you can find it. We have shipped hundreds of these sides to happy customers all over the country.

* Great for knife sheaths, pet toys, key fobs, straps, mocassins, chaps, Native American crafts, strops for knife sharpening, rugged looking vests, belt and purse linings, shop aprons, fringes and trims, garment applications; inlays, repairs, pillow backings, patches, woodburnings, scout crafts, and a thousand other uses...

But I had no idea it would be so thin. For reference, it's just about twice as thick as a paperback's cover. This surprised me because it's described as:
"Great for knife sheaths, pet toys, key fobs, straps, mocassins, chaps, Native American crafts, strops for knife sharpening, rugged looking vests, belt and purse linings, shop aprons, fringes and trims, garment applications; inlays, repairs, pillow backings, patches, woodburnings, scout crafts"

As far as "knife sheaths, key fobs, mocassins, chaps and strops for knife sharpening" goes I've NEVER seen leather this thin used for any of those purposes.

I suppose you could make a "rugged looking vests" if you were making them for Ken Dolls. No doubt this would butch ol' Ken right up.

And the rest are pretty much fabric applications and I could see how it would be useful there as it's about the thickness of canvas.

Still, it is a piece of leather with a very uniform and pleasing (to my eye) finish. I'll do something with it but it's not suitable for the purpose it was purchased for.

Okay I purchased these two supposed medium weight leather for some knife sheaths and other ideas but I do not think I will be doing that after receiving the leather today. I honestly in good consciousness can not use this stuff for a knife sheath. It is supposed to be around 4-6oz weight leather (Medium weight leather) not 1-3oz weight like it feels.

EDIT:I sat down and measured this leather just now, there is not a 2mm section on this leather, of either 2 sq ft section I bought. I measure 1mm all the way around on one section and not even a legit 1mm measuring on the other leather section.

As for shipping and all that, top notch, bang up job on getting it to me fast but would I order from them again, probably not. I normally buy my leather in person so this was a 70/30 chance, 30 being getting a good selection of ordering online.

I will NOT recommend this seller to anyone. You did not advertise the correct measurements for the leather, therefore I got the crappy end of the deal. I will see how my items turn out but this was a bust of an order.

I purchased two of these to make some custom footwear for a rennaissance faire. The pieces did not disappoint. They were the right thickness, nice and soft with enough strength and durability to be used regularly throughout the entire 3-day weekend and don't look like they wore down at all. I had several people ask me to make more shoes for them and will probably purchase much more and make some shoes for sale at the local fairs also. A great price and great piece of leather. Thanks!

Product came as described. I'm using it for a DIY strop and so far it has worked out great. This is not tooling leather so don't expect a smooth full grain piece of hide. This is "split" leather so slightly rough on both sides and only about 1mm or so thick. I see a few bad reviews of the "split" pieces by people who don't know what they need for their purposes and are therefore inaccurate. Research in leather cuts is imperative to buy the right thing!

This is a big, stiff sheet of leather...thicker and stiffer than I thought, but not wrongly advertised, just not supple. I think it would work well as moccasin bottoms, very sturdy and strong (and stiff, haha)! I bought it to make repairs (using Goop glue) in GF's various house moccasin's, it's a little stiff except for sole holes. For other than sole type repair I would choose something more pliant.

Purchased the leather and buffing compound to make a wood-backed leather strop. After sharpening the edges on diamond stones polishing the edges with the leather strop loaded with the compound produces a reflective surface. These edges cut through wood beautifully.

Definitely recommend this for anyone looking to make their own strops.

I bought a piece of this leather a couple months ago for a knife sheath I was working on. I'm extremely new to leatherworking, and wanted an inexpensive small piece to experiment with. This split was exactly what I wanted. It's softer than saddle leather, but much harder and rougher than garment leather.

Keep in mind, this is NOT finished top grain -- it's a plain, undyed and unfinished split. It'll be kinda rough and hard and light-colored (think pale tan - the picture is quite dark). It's got a soft suede top side and a kinda yucky underside. I'm not sure why people keep giving bad reviews because they didn't read the description and were expecting smooth, finished top grain leather.

Anyway, I finished my sheath, and it's holding together very nicely. I really like this leather.

I bought this to protect a desk from the clamp on a dual screen stand, and it works just fine. The piece I got was untreated (I guess. I don't know much about leather) and cut just fine. I cut out a square and stuck it between the clamps and the desk. Makes me comfortable tightening the clamps.
