Great Tool - Fragile Finish,
By David (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Leatherman 64030103 Red Stainless Micra Tool (Tools & Home Improvement)
I love my Micra and carry it everywhere, but the fashion colors don't last. The finish begins to scratch off within a few weeks. Mine used to be red. Unless you are going to keep it in a velvet case, just buy the silver because that's what you'll eventually have.

Useful but not very durable,

This review is from: Leatherman 64010103H Silver Micra (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've had my Leatherman Micra for about 5 years now after getting it on a fishing trip. Its extemely useful for everyay things, especially cutting with the scissors. Only two things wrong with this multi tool. 1. If you try to cut something too hard the scissors will kinck. 2. The tweezers are way too flimsy to use purposefully. They are too thin and even bend if you put too much pressure on them. Other then these two problems which you can avoid, the micra is awesome and you will find yourself using it everyday. USES (and ratings): Tweezers- Too flimsy to use. These thin things wont even grasp anything. Getting splinters out of fingers is about as tough as a job as it will handle. 2/5 Ruler- It is not long enough and many of the increments are missing. Not many uses. 1/5 Screwdrivers- Its always handy to have 3 tiny screwdrivers around. I use these often because I dont have any real screwdrivers that have heads that small. The only problem is that if you try to put too much pressure on them, since there is no lock, they may come foward and pinch your finger. Very convienient though. 4/5 Clip Point Knife- Comes sharp. Nothing really special or different. Its small, but what did you expect? Handy when needed. 4/5 Bottle Opener- Now who is going to have a bottle opener when you need it? When away from home, the chance you're going to have a bottle opener is very slim. The chance you will have your micra is not. Sheer convienience, and also doubles s an XS screwdriver. 5/5 Nail Cleaner/File- The file can smooth down all of the rough spots and hangnails after a hard day of work. This may sound womanly, but I hate hangnails. My fingernails must be smooth or it's distracting for me. The nail cleaner can reach under your nail to scrape out all of the dirt and crap. 4/5 Overall 4/5 for Its size and value. My tweezers are now out of proportion and the scissors have knicks, because of cutting things too hard. Just make sure when/if you get one, cut SOFT things, and don't try to do amazing things with the tweezers.

A good tool set that could be perfected,

This is a sturdy tool and each of the tools it contains is useful as a small, close-at-hand substitute for something that would be too large to carry around all the time.As with most of these types of combo-pocket-tools, the ruler is of negligible value. The others are all useful and made from high quality stainless steel. The scissors could be made much much better though if the two halves were joined with a screw, as more expensive scissors generally are, rather than a rivet. The blades tend to splay rather than cut, and this worsens over time as the rivet wears and loosens. So the scissors become essentially useless. With a screw instead of a rivet, one could adjust the tightness as necessary. Also, because a rivet is used, one cannot take the scissor blades apart to resharpen them. So this also shortens the useful life of the scissors. Using screw instead of a rivet would increase the price. Perhaps it's best to just consider the Micra a tool that one disposes and replaces every few months (year?) when the scissors become too badly worn. At twenty bucks, that not out of the question. Note that, as with all pocket knives, screwdrivers, etc. that are not true "lock-back" types, the tool can fold over while you are using it and damage your flesh. A more secure (a true) locking mechanism would be a tremendous improvement.

Prior to buying the Leatherman Micra I carried a keyring version of the Equinox Swiss Army style knife. I loved my Equinox, but after 15 years it simply was worn out. I was a bit hesitant to try the Micra, but after my son bought one (and loved it) I decided to give the tool a try.I love the Micra because it has more tools that my Equinox. Of course, it's about twice the size, too, so I'll have to temper my praise with that recognition. For the size, though, it is still relatively comfortable in my pocket, and like my Equinox I carry it on my keyring. I even carry it when wearing a suit or dress slacks, and it doesn't stand out too much. I haven't gotten used to always having to open the scissors to access the knife. As you can see from the picture above, you have to open the scissors to access all the tools, including the knife. I use both the scissors and knive a lot (and the knife a little more than the scissors), so I would like to be able to access the knife from the other side of the opening (so the scissors didn't have to be opened first). Maybe this is something Leatherman will work on. One of the the problems with my Equinox was the fact that the tweezers were seperate from the knife/scissors itself. That was good, for about a week, and then I lost the darn things. They simply slipped out, and I had to replace them. I ended up replacing at least 4 pair in 15 years, and I finally just gave up buying replacements. With the Micra, though, I'll not have to worry about because the tweezers are part of the tool itself. The downside is that when you use the tweezers, just like any tool, you also have the whole thing in your hand. Of course these small multi-tools are really for short term work. One trick that I learned was to use a keyring that seperates (one side for keys and the other for the Micra). That way, if I want to use the tool for more than a brief period I can acutally remove it from the keys and have more flexibility. Overall this is a very good tool (a little on the pricey side), and I'd recommend it as a good gift for any man (or woman) who carries a pocket knife or similar tool.

Micra is excellent! But go for the silver...,

This review is not about the functionality and practicality of the Micra: that speaks for itself. Just a quick caveat emptor: Buy the silver one! I received a blue Micra as a birthday gift, and within one week, 20% of the blue finish had worn off. Of course, I carry it on my key ring and there's a lot of abrasion there, but Leatherman should think of such a thing. I don't mind the look of my worn and weary! Micra, it was the flakes of blue paint that annoyed me most.BUY a Micra, only make sure it's Silver!

Don't buy the colored one,

I like this tool. I have it with in keychain and take it everywhere. However, after a week with all the keys, the color starts to peeling of from the Mircra. It looks ugly. Next time I would buy a non-colored one.

An all around great tool,

This is probably the most usefull tool I have. It's small enough to fit in your pocket. I always have it handy. The tools on this Leatherman Micra are high quality, this is not some cheap stamped metal. The quality is unbeatable. Scissors: The Unique spring design collapes when not in use. Each blade has a little tooth and notch. The tooth lever presses against a leaf spring. The cutting action is smooth and clean. Knife: This knife is very sharp! The first time I opened this knife I shaved off a few layers of skin on my finger. I didn't notice it until later. I have never had any problem cutting or scoring anything with this knife. Nail File tool: The file part of this tool is not the standard cross-hatched grooves in a piece of steel. This tool is 1/16th of an inch wide! The sanding action is created by the texture of sandpaper on this tool. Much better than traditional files. This is an all around great tool. You won't be disapointed.

I own the blue Micra tool and the paint all chipped off after a week of owning it.... that's probably why the paint isn't covered in the warranty. Otherwise, it's a great tool.

Perfect Little Scissors,

This review is from: Leatherman 64010103H Silver Micra (Tools & Home Improvement)
The Leatherman Micra is the perfect size for a purse or keychain. I've had my little Micra for many years, and the little scissors have come in handy more times than I can count, and have remained very sharp and precise. The only tool that's frustrating is the tweezers... too short and flimsey to really be functional. The tool would be perfect if those tweezers could really grab a splinter or stray hair once in a while. Oh, and DON'T forget to take it off your keychain when going through airport security! It might be tiny, but it's still a tool. They will send you back to the counter to check it.

I'm about to order my third, or maybe it's fourth, Leatherman Micra. First one was a gift. I had it on my belt when I went up onto our roof to remove some sunscreens I'd put on our skylights as autumn approached. I used the tool to remove screws and replace them. Then I noticed moss growing on the edge of our shingles (this is wet Oregon) and started scraping and somehow spent the next two hours scraping it off the whole roof. I wore the screwdriver blade down to about half its original size. I emailed Leatherman, mailed it in, and had a brand new Micra within a week.But...I have a bad habit of losing knives. I lost this one within a couple of weeks. I bought a red one. Paint job fell off, otherwise it was as good as the other one. I lost that one a couple of weeks ago (and although I engraved my phone number in it, no one called!). I reach for it when I get packages to open, when I want to cut paper, when I need to tighten a screw--but there's no Micra on my key ring anymore. I guess I'm hooked. I'm ordering another one. |
