Oh no another Wave review!!!,

I'm using multi tools since the day they were invented. And if they haven't been invented I would have to do it my self so thank you Mr. Leatherman. I never liked Leatherman products because plier's handles were pinching my hands (original tool). For a while I wondered of and bought into Gerber family than Shrade and Swiss Army. After multiple failures I decided to give Leatherman Wave a try and I'm not disappointed. So here we go:Strengths: Weaknesses: Ok so why 5 stars? Just because it's the best tool made so far. There is nothing better made out there. Yes it has its problems and some design flows but in comparison to hundreds of similar products available out there this one really stands out. My Wave was stolen in Africa and while looking for replacement I tested multiple tools of similar shape and purposes but guess what? I'm back with the Wave again.

I got the original leatherman in the summer of 1994 when I was planning to do a lot of camping. Then I upgraded to the Wave as a present for myself around Xmas 98 (the original went in my fishing tackle box). I have worn it every day on my belt, most days accompanied by a compact tape measure as well. I get a lot of teasing for it from my friends, but it doesn't matter. The Wave is indespensable, I like to say it's not always the right tool, but it's always the "right there" tool. I use it for work as an engineer, on home repair projects, whenever the need arises. I use it least once a day, if not more. A perfect gift for any mechanically inclined person on your shopping list. Hands down the best multi-tool around.Drawbacks? When I first got it, I cut my thumb a couple of times trying to one-hand open the external blades. The scissors and the serrated blade have gotten a little dull and I am not sure how to sharpen them. There are too many flat screwdrivers (4 in all). I would get rid of one of them in favor of something else.

Compact and Useful,

I ended up getting the Leatherman Wave for its one-hand opening blades, good needlenose pliers and compact size.Pros go first: Solid - All tools have solid feel (except the scissors). Blades are locked positively. Pliers are strong. So are the rest. Here come the Cons: Too many flat screwdrivers (4) - I'd rather replace one flat screwdriver with something else. Handles wobble in closed position - No play in deployed position but has < 1/8" play when closed. It's very noticable when you open blade using one hand. It's not mentioned in web reviews but talked a lot in newsgroups. Every Wave does that and it doens't seem to hurt the durability. Just doesn't match the overall quality of the tool and yes, annoying. Poor scissors - Scissors wobble. The pivot rivet is not tight (probably for a reason because scissor blades are slightly curved for better shearing). When handle is fully depressed, blade points cross each other by 1/8" which is really annoying for fine cutting. However, I don't expect to use it very often. Scissors on SwissTool or Gerber multi-tool (no wonder, it's a Fiskars company that makes excellent scissors) are much better. Fit and Finish - It's good but you won't be happy if you are a Swiss knife owner. Handle, bolsters and pliers are finished smoothly. All other tools have clear signs of machining. Random nicks, marks on handles and pliers. I went to a local store to check out all Leatherman Wave (8 of them) in plastic package and they all have nicks or marks. I guess workers just toss the products into the bins in the factory. I'd rather put the sign of heavy use by myself. A combination of Wave and SwissTool will be great. It doesn't exist for now and I chose Wave.
