5.0 out of 5 stars Best Locking Pliers, good for Bicycle repairs on the road.
This leatherman takes the place of a pair of locking pliers in my bike tool kit. It's not the one I carry on a daily basis, as my other leatherman has more tools (Pulse (tm) ). 2.0 out of 5 stars Almost, but not quite....
It is a shame, because I was so exited when I first saw the Crunch,"a multi-tool with vicegrips? What could be better?"
Unfortunately, the lack of tool hardening makes for great pliers, but soft tools that seem to degrade every time I use them. I Scratched the FILE on a NAIL I was trying to file down, How sad. All my flathead screwdrivers are twisted or bent,...

This leatherman takes the place of a pair of locking pliers in my bike tool kit. It's not the one I carry on a daily basis, as my other leatherman has more tools (Pulse (tm) ). And the clip that holds the handles to the pliers can get loosey goosey, which is where owning a second set of pliers comes in handy, a small squeeze to tighten and its working again.

Pluses:
The locking mechanism is the easies to use of all the leathermans.
Great locking pliers that fold up into a very small package. (And for bike repair these are a must.)

Minus:
The file is short, the knife is serriated and difficult to sharpen. (On the other hand it stays sharp a long time) The hole for holding screw driver bits is inside where the tightening knob is. It works but barely and the handle can get in the way and there is no way to put much leverage on the screw. (The leatherman tool adaptor for my other leatherman works much better for this.)

5 starts but its not a general purpose leatherman.

5.0 out of 5 stars CRUNCH!, December 5, 2002
By A Customer
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Leatherman 68010103H Crunch with Leather Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement)
At first I didn't like the 'feel' of the crunch, but like all Leatherman, you have to use it awhile to like it, and, finally love it. I love it now.
Well, they got the name right! The Crunch can definitely do just that. Nothing stands in the way of these things. If it fits in the jaws of this beast, it can be crunched and crushed. The multiplying strength of this thing is amazing (I don't recommend this, but you can squish a AA battery like a grape). I really like the wire stripers in the handle. I didn't even notice this feature till I read the manual (yes, I'm male ;) I like the locking blade et al. The blade is perfect for cardboard boxes, but is tough for anything requiring precision. I would like to see a straight blade instead of the serrated, just because it's easier to sharpen.
I think this is a bit on the pricey side, but Amazon is definitely the best deal out there that I've found.
The tool is also on the heavy/large size, but this is a plus because of the torque this thing has. I recommend this to anyone who wants to put `their back into it', however, go elsewhere if you want to repair you fine Swiss watch with this. Great for any application where teeth marks aren't going to be a problem.
Closing it could be a problem for some, because it takes quite a bit of strength to close the jaw. It also takes some time to open, so just whipping this out is a two handed chore. Trying my fastest, it takes about 4 seconds to open or close, and that's the fastest I can do it. My other Leatherman take about half a second.
Overall, I recommend this crunch to anyone who's not afraid of doing things the rough and tough macho way. Think Tim Alan's Leatherman. Grunt Grunt....

5.0 out of 5 stars Crunch, February 20, 2004
This review is from: Leatherman 68010103H Crunch with Leather Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement)
I got the crunch because it was different and unique. A helpful tool to have around the garage, and thats eactly what it is. Once this thing latches on to say, a stripped nut, it's not coming off. I was amazed when I saw the crunch unfold into extremely effective vice grips, then fold it back up into a tiny ractangle. Theres nothing wrong with this super tool. Never have I seen anything "crunch" this hard. When i first got it, I crushed a plastic pen to try it out. It shattered. I then moved on to the garage. I latched its shark jaw onto a stripped nut. This thing gives so much torque. I yanked and yanked but this was on tight. The crunch is also good to take on bike rides. It tightens the chain and all of the other hex nuts on it. The crunch is like every other leathrerman, except with less tools and a far better set of pliers. This, and the micra, are the most used of my leatherman collection. (read my micra review).

I wear this tool on my belt every day and use it daily. The adjustable locking pliars are top quality and can actually break nuts and bolts loose that have been torqued down on most light to medium jobs. This tool is remarkably handy, tough and built with the highest quality standards.

When I bought my Crunch, I already owned a Leatherman SuperTool and Wave, so I was already familiar with Leatherman quality and versatility. My intention when I purchased the Crunch was to have a great companion tool for my others, and I haven't been dissappointed. Whenever I need an extra hand to hold down what I'm working on, or two screwdrivers, or a wriench and screwdriver at the same time, the Crunch comes through. 9 times out of 10, it's the vise-grip that I'm using, so this is the most important thing to me. Being in the Army, it's important that the equipment I work with works, because the alternative is unacceptable. Whether it's here in the states, or walking the streets of Baghdad, the Crunch works for me every time and I keep it with me everywhere I go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Of The Bunch, June 4, 2002

I received the Leatherman Crunch last month as a company incentive award. When some of us were asked what we would like some months back, it was hands down "A Leatherman". The known Leatherman quality, multiple versatile options (locking pliers, wire cutters and the usual files, screwdrivers) make it a good choice, even if it was a gift.

All my flathead screwdrivers are twisted or bent, and the Phillips is rounded out and does not really grip screws well anymore. I don't remember my other multi-tools from Leatherman being made of such soft metal. Great Idea, but this tool suffers from poor execution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best multitool on market, November 21, 2010
This review is from: Leatherman 68010103H Crunch with Leather Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is the only multitool that actually offers a real pair of pliers. The only thing wrong with the tool is that I persoally don't care for serratted knifes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now, this is a real tool!!, January 21, 2009
This review is from: Leatherman 68010103H Crunch with Leather Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement)
The Crunch is a real handy tool. With Vice Grip-like action, it has many more uses than the typical Leatherman plier. While it does not have some of the multi-tool pieces like the others out there, it does have an incredibly sharp blade, screwdrivers, wire cutters, a file, and other stuff. But I have used the vice grips more than anything. I wouldn't trade it for any other multi-tool. Why pinch something when you can grip it and let go, then use both hands for other things??
