The Leatherman Tool Group and its History of Quality

In 1975, Leatherman Tool Group founder Tim Leatherman was inspired by leaky pipes and a cranky car on a budget trip to Europe -- and thus the idea for his first pocket survival tool was conceived. Since then, Leatherman has become an internationally recognized company with hundreds of employees and a wide variety of durable, versatile, stylish products. Created with bold designs and truly rugged construction, Leatherman products are a perfect addition for tool kits, emergency sets, and glove compartments everywhere.

I was very excited to receive my Leatherman Juice S2. When I received it I ripped open the package like a lion tearing apart its prey. The whole fit and finish of my Juice S2 are great. I found the Flathead bits slightly hard to deploy but honestly I rather have it that way. If you have long nails or brittle nails it might be very difficult to deploy the Flathead screwdrivers. This might not be how all the tools are but I noticed it with mine. The Philips deployed easily and while none of the tools actually lock they do retain in the open position very well. The blade came very sharp as most Leatherman blades do so that's not much of a surprise. You must deploy the Can opener to get to the scissors but that is fine with me. The can opener is not my favorite but it will work. I decided to test it out and getting it to puncture the can initially was very hard as it is not sharp at all. Once you get that initial cut the can opener is decent. I rather have it than not so i'm not really complaining about it but they could have made it a bit sharper. The Scissors are bigger than most all other Leatherman scissors and perform well. I have not cut a wide variety of materials with them yet but I have tested it on a few materials. They have performed almost flawlessly. Last but not least is the Pliers. They are what I would call Mid Size but will get some work done if needed. While I carry this tool every day it works for my needs. If you have a job that demands pliers in your daily routine these might be a bit small for your needs. If this sounds like you I would look into the Kick,Fuse, and Blast models. I highly recommend the Blast but it comes with a bit more heft. The Kick is great and inexpensive but lacks locking blades and a few tools.Read more ›

I got this for my dad because I have one. I carry it with me everywhere and I may not use it every day but at least once a week. It is small enough not to notice but has all the tools to fix small things with out having to go find your tool box.

The Juice S2 is an ideal pocket tool. It fits perfectly between the micro-sized, almost decorative mini-tools and the full sized industrial beasts that often get left in the tool drawer. Any larger and I would prefer a pocket clip. Any smaller and it wouldn't be as useful.

Pros
1) Ideal size for pocket carry
2) Excellent tool selection (pliers, a *real* Phillips, blade, scissors, slotted drivers, bottle opener)
3) Excellent workmanship (fit is tight, no play in the tools)
4) Reasonable price

Cons
None really to speak of. I do prefer a spring-assist on the pliers, but these work so well that I don't mind not having it.

The overall size of the Juice S2 is my favorite feature. It's always a balance between size and assortment, but for my purposes the choices were ideal. For example, the Juice S2 forgoes the can opener, nail file, pocket clib, carabiner, saw, and other items that are less useful on a day to day basis (providing your work/lifestyle does not require a 3" sawblade available at all times :D ).

The design is very good. The scissors and blade are accessible without opening the tool. The screwdrivers, which I use less often, are inside but still convenient. Some have mentioned that the tools do not lock in place (i.e., liner lock or other secondary mechanism) but I think this is actually a good feature and not a compromise.

Other tools in this price range include the Gerber Crucial, but the Leatherman is so vastly superior to the Crucial that they cannot be compared (this coming from someone who generally prefers Gerber tools).

With every other multi-tool I've owned, the pliers are spring-loaded and open when you release the handles. My full-sized Gerber Suspension tool does this. Even my little Leatherman Squirt performs in this manner. I guess I took this feature for granted, because I sorely miss this in the Juice S2. Otherwise, this is a decent tool, but please think seriously about your expectations of how the most important feature - the pliers - function.

Quit looking around. Get one and put it in your pocket. This is very functional and I use it all the time. Just get it and quit looking around.

This is one of my favorite multi-tools and I have a pretty large collection of them. The S2 generally has the tools I need and nothing that I don't making it comfortably pocketable. Other's have given detailed reviews about their strengths, but I wanted to add that I with a little bit of grinding, this can make the perfect TSA approved travel companion. The TSAs new regs lists knife blades of 6 cm. acceptable. The Juice S2 is 6.6cm and it was an easy task to grind the spine of the blade down 1/2 a centimeter to meet that requirement. See that attached photo. Until Leatherman does this themselves, I think this is as good as it gets for an air travel tool.

I used to own a full-size Leatherman tool, but found I rarely had it with me when I needed it because it was too bulky so it always sat at home in a drawer. This tool does a nice job of balancing commonly used tools in a small enough design that I can carry it around without it feeling cumbersome. The trade-off for the reduced size is fewer features. But I've found I don't really miss the features that were left off this particular model because I didn't use them very often. This model still has several different screwdriver heads, a knife, pliers, and scissors (which work "ok", kind of like elementary school classroom scissors). And for most common tasks, that's plenty. There are some other functions on it but the ones I mentioned are the ones I use the most. The build quality feels solid, just like a typical Leatherman.
