Leatherman Tool Group Juice CS4 Multitool Pliers 74204003K Networking Hand Tools

The Juice butterflies open to reveal a great assortment of rugged, versatile tools.

The Exceptional Juice CS4 Pocket Multitool

The Juice CS4 from Leatherman is packed with excitement. Built on the same medium-sized chassis as the S2, it's protected by boldly colored anodized aluminum handles that open to reveal pliers, wire cutters and four screwdrivers, as well as a convenient saw and awl. Extremely useful serrated scissors are immediately available, along with a handy corkscrew, perfect for an emergency picnic on the slopes.

Key User Features

The integrated scissors are easily accessed with a nail nick, and the regular and hard-wire cutters are simple to lift out with their small notches. For easier removal of a cork, a notched assist is located at the end of the can/bottle opener. All you have to do is twist the corkscrew into a cork, then position the assist so the notch rests on the top edge of the bottle -- then lift the handles. It's as easy as opening a bottle of wine in your own kitchen.

The Juice CS4 features blades made of 100-percent high-grade stainless steel. Highly corrosion-resistant, these blades are extremely easy to maintain -- just clean them, dry them, and occasionally re-oil them for years of long life and great service.

The Leatherman Tool Group and its History of Quality

In 1975, Leatherman Tool Group founder Tim Leatherman was inspired by leaky pipes and a cranky car on a budget trip to Europe -- and thus the idea for his first pocket survival tool was conceived. Since then, Leatherman has become an internationally recognized company with hundreds of employees and a wide variety of durable, versatile, stylish products. Created with bold designs and truly rugged construction, Leatherman products are a perfect addition for tool kits, emergency sets, and glove compartments everywhere.

It's about the size of a regular swiss army knife, but feels much more durable and practical.

I had been considering a Leatherman Wave (you should look at the new Charge tool too if you are considering the Wave), but always thought it was too big and bulky to carry around.

The CS4 is perfect for an everyday-tool to carry with you.

Leatherman makes a series of "Juice" tools, you can see a list of them and what features they have at their website. To me the CS4 was the best combination of bulk and features.

After getting a keychain tool for my wife (Victorinox Manager), I have also considered getting a decent multi-tool myself and this has caused weeks of sleepless research.

My initial conclusion (after reading reviews, watching videos on the internet and seeing the knives in person at various retailers), I thought a good balance between weight, size and functionality would be the Victorinox Climber plus (as recommended by someone from youtube). However, after receiving the SAK, I have realised it doesn't offer much more practical tools than my wife's Manager for its size. While there is no doubt the Climber is a lightweight pocket knife with really decent build quality, I was disappointed with the number of practical features it has on offer for its size (sorry - a hook? 2 knives but no saw/serrated blade?). So shortly after getting my brand new Climber, I've decide to sell it and restart my search for an ideal multi-tool.

So I have put more emphasis on functinoality the second time around. For my living, I have to travel a lot and deal with computers a lot. So tools such as Philips and pliers (with wire cutter) quickly become part of the selection criteria. This criteria has quickly narrowed the choice down to a few SAK and Leatherman. For SAK, I was looking at the 91mm models such as Cybertool and Handyman or the 110mm Hercules or Tradesman. The Hercules in particular has absolutely everything I need and nothing extra and was a particularly attractive model. However, with a hefty weight and size (particularly thickness) - it has been ruled out. Another reason for me to not consider SAK is their pliers .... they're more of an accessory than a real pair of pliers.

Leatherman. A name that has gone hand in hand with the term multitool for 25 years now. While they have created a great many wonderful products, not all can be first among equals.

This brings us to the Juice CS4, Leatherman's foray into the world of pocket tools. I had this tool for about 2 or 3 months, putting it through the paces until ultimately decided I liked larger tools better.

First off, the good. I like the variety of tools available on the small frame. It's a tad heavy, but not terrible. The pliers are good for light to medium duty work. The blade was nice and sharp out of the clam pack. And I really like the awl. And most of the important tools open from the outside, while the pliers are closed. That's an A+ feature right there. The scissors are 'okay' too, nearly on par with SAK scissors. However, all is not well in paradise.

The blade, while a respectable 2.75" and perfectly usable, I could not find a away to enjoy it. The shape was a contorted spear-point that seemed too thin on the profile and the spine. Same with the saw; it's just flimsy.

Also annoying is the can opener. It doesn't work; too dull. Additionally, it has to be extended in order to access the corkscrew. A minor complaint, but still worth noting. Same with the awl/saw; the awl must be extended in order to open/close the sorry excuse for a saw.

Finally, the screwdrivers. While they are perfectly usable, they are a bit too short for my liking. The phillips head driver is more of a nub than anything else.

It's a good idea to have a pocket multitool like this. But at 50 bucks a pop, you're better off spending a few more dollars and getting a full sized multi tool.

Verified Purchase
The first one I ordered broke on the second day I had it - the bottle opener cracked in half after opening two bottles. Not too encouraging. I contacted Leatherman, thinking their customer service would be better than Amazon, and that they'd want to know about the defect in the product. Not really. I received a quick reply to the effect that I could ship it back to them at my expense, then wait a couple of weeks for repair or replacement.

Amazon to the rescue - my first experience with their customer service, and it was great. After filling out the online return form, they immediately shipped a replacement overnight, and provided a return label for me to ship the broken tool back at their expense. Excellent - even easier than returning something to a local store.

I've put the replacement (including the bottle opener!) through the paces with no problems - chalk it up to a random defect. Design of this tool is excellent: small enough to carry in a pocket with most of the useful accessories in the bigger Leathermans. I recommend it - just don't open your bottles too vigorously!
