MULTI-TOOL, CHARGE AL, 6061-T6

Amazon.com

Charge's pliers have been redesigned to handle
133% more squeezing load.

Charge locks are 50% stronger than
Leatherman's original tools.

Bronze bushings make the interior tools smooth
and quick to open.

Each Charge tool has multiple bit drivers, and the
Charge sheath allows you to carry the additional
bits anywhere you go.

The AL comes packed with long-lasting scissors.
When it comes to multitools, there’s one brand that stands out from the rest: Leatherman. The name is synonymous with quality and innovation, and each successive generation of Leatherman tools improves upon the last. Sticking with its tradition of pushing the design envelope, Leatherman introduces the Charge AL, an ultra-compact multitool featuring aerospace aluminum handles. If you’re looking to carry the best of what Leatherman has to offer, the AL could be for you.

The Charge Family
The Charge AL is part of a broader line of Leatherman multitools bearing the Charge name. Originally, the Charge line consisted of the Ti and the XTi, two high-end tools whose major distinguishing characteristic was having handles made from titanium. For 2007, Leatherman has added three new members to the Charge family: the TTi, the AL, and the ALX. As you might expect, the TTi is essentially an upgraded version of the Ti and XTi. The AL and ALX, meanwhile, come with handles made from 6061 T6 aluminum, an ultra-light and super-strong material used in aircraft construction.

Leatherman has added several key design elements to all of these gorgeous new Charge tools. For instance, the knife blades are bigger and wider, allowing you to cut more efficiently. The pliers can withstand 133% higher squeezing load than Leatherman’s original tools, enabling a tighter hold for tough jobs, and you’ll never have to worry about it coming unhinged, either, thanks to a 50% increase in lock strength. Multiple bit drivers also are a standard feature, and each Charge has bronze bushings at the hinges to make opening tools a snap.

The Charge AL
Like the ALX, the AL has handles made from heat-treated, hard-anodized aluminum. However, there are differences between the two, the main one being that the AL features scissors instead of a cutting hook. This is a nice feature for anyone who thinks they’ll do more cutting than ripping. The AL also lacks a crimper, which is an ideal accessory for anyone working with electrical wires or metals. It does have a saw, and it has the same 154CM stainless steel knife as the ALX. In terms of weight, the AL is the heaviest of the three, weighing in at 8.4 ounces. (The ALX weighs 8.3 ounces and the titanium TTi weighs 8.2 ounces.)

To sum up, the AL is a superb multitool that will meet demanding users' needs. If you value scissors over a cutting hook and a crimper, the AL is a perfect option. Full product specs:

Leather or Nylon Carrying Case

Both versions will carry the tools in their open or closed position and two side pockets hold your extra necessities—even a mini-flashlight. An inside back pocket holds Charge's included bits and has room for a full Bit Kit (sold separately) giving you up to 42 bits to choose from. Don't want to wear a sheath? Then clip your Charge to your jacket, backpack or car's visor with the removable pocket clip. Or, choose the quick-release lanyard ring. With it, you're able to safely keep the tool on any lanyard and detach it quickly when you need it.

The Leatherman Story
The Leatherman phenomenon began in 1975 when founder Tim Leatherman embarked on a trip across Europe and the Middle East in a cranky Fiat. Leatherman, an engineer by training, became so fed up with breakdowns and other hassles that he fashioned a prototype of what he called a Pocket Survival Tool out of cardboard. Two years later the first PST was born in his basement, and the rest is history. Today the Leatherman company produces dozens of different multitools, knives, pruners, and accessories, and is recognized across the world for its cutting edge designs and superior quality.

I love this product! It has all the tools that I could ever ask for in a multitool. It is quite durable too. I dropped it off of the side of my truck onto the pavement and it barely scratched. I also like it because it is the perfect size. Not too big to not be able to fit into my pocket, and not too small to be impractical. I highly recommend buying this product if you are in the market for a multitool.

I got the new wave for my groomsmen last year and I thought those were great. Though they are similar, this Leatherman is much better! It is so light that you almost forget that you're wearing it. Since it is so light you may also forget that it is a pretty big tool with a lot of functionality. The Tin is the way to go, as you get the clip and lanyard attachments as well as some bits included. Great purchase, especially since it was a SD!

This is the best tool I have ever owned. I worried that it may be too bulky at first for the kind of work I do, but instead I find it invaluable. The steel in the blades hold a razor sharp edge well and it sharpens up like new when needed. I love it and will buy another if I ever loose this one.

I received this product on 11/30 and inspected it shortly afterward. I'm thinking someone actually bought this, used it and sent it back, and then was given to me. The leatherman looked dirty, there is what appears to be rust on the blade and wear on the file. Leatherman is a top quality product, so I'm disappointed on how this item arrived to me. I would send it back if I didn't need it so badly for some work I'm currently doing. Next time I buy a leatherman, I will not go through amazon.

I bought this Leatherman Charge AL to replace a Leatherman Blast that I lost. I thought I would upgrade to the more than double in price AL. BIG MISTAKE! I dont know if Leatherman dropped the ball in their QC department or if someone returned a used product to Amazon and they tried to pawn it off on me. The rivets holding the name plates on the handles were so loose they were pratically falling off. The main blade was not locking up properly. Fingerprints all over the tools like it had been used. I returned it immediatly. This is the first product from Amazon (and Leathermans) that I had a problem with. Buyer beware! Also the picture shows the premium nylon sheath ... yea... you dont get the sheath shown.

After having used Leatherman products for 15 years in construction, lawn-care, as an undergraduate engineering student, weapons shooter and as a combat engineer, I believe that this is the finest multi-tool I have ever used. I particularly like the ability to carry multiple bits to use for allen wrenches and other unique drivers.

Another key point on this knife is the excellent 154CM steel blade that provides an excellent cutting edge equivalent to the steels used in other high grade knives.

The aluminum handles make this leatherman more lightweight than some of the other knives, and overall, this tool is of the perfect size.

The scissors aren't as tough and durable as contained in other Leatherman Products, such as the Leatherman Surge's, but are adequate for most uses. The excellent diamond coated file, and the wood saw provide great utility for random tasks requiring the use of this tool.

Overall, an excellent product.

I bought it for traveling so I always had some way of mending / modifying things on the go. I also got the driver kit and extension. Because this is my first proper multi-tool, I had no idea how much I might use it and felt it hard to justify the extra expanse over something like the Gerber equivalent.

It's rapidly turned into something that I depend on almost every day, and it instills a great deal of confidence. I'm not sure how it stacks up against cheaper tools, but if I had to replace it from loss or damage I would buy exactly the same model again. It's very good.

One of the 3 best multitools out there! You have the ALX the TTI and the AL. I have all 3 of them and I can say this Charge Al is my favorite they're all similar but this particular model didn't have the rivets ground down like on my ALX which was my favorite but I needed the scissors real bad Thats why I love the AL not to mention I like the look of the black handles better than the titanium handles on the TTI! I will probably have these multitools for the rest of my life that's how well made they are
