The greatest multitool EVER!,
This review is from: Leatherman 831102 Super Tool-300 Multitool with Premium Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement)
What a great tool. I am a huge fan of the Super Tool 200, which i still use, so I will use that as a comparison. I've had the 300 for about a month and a half, so it is still in the break in stage, as it is quite stiff to open and close. A quick usage background on myself, I work as a mechanic/technician on vehicles and equipment ranging from utility ATVs to diesel engines to heavy equipment, including road service calls. I wear and use this tool daily. It holds up extremely well in rough industrial shop environments. My Super Tool has seen battery acid, hammering, prying, twisting steel banding among other things, being dropped on concrete, and it still works wonderfully.
Noticeable improvements: My well broken in 200 has the problem of flinging the blade out when I open the tool. They corrected this problem on the 300 by inserting a small detent to create a positive stop at the inner base of both the straight and serrated blades. The cutaway to access either blade is much bigger. Makes it easier to open the blade, given the extra small bit of effort required with the addition of the detent stop and if you wear utility gloves. The plier head is much stronger and wider with replaceable wire cutter blades. The plier jaws on the 300 are square cut and thicker instead of rounded over like the 200. (just remember to use threadlocker when you re-install the torx screw after blade replacement) The depth of the handle is noticeably bigger, though not by much, adding a more solid, bulky feel in my hand. I have relatively large hands and it is very comfortable. The phillips screwdriver is stronger with a more beefed up shank. The saw blade is slightly wider, adding more strength. The blade release button is greatly improved. Consisting of a wide thumb pad the width of the handle, it makes for releasing the tools a breeze, especially while wearing gloves. The lanyard eyelet is bigger The flat tipped screw drivers (all 3) are bigger with a more professional bevel at the tip. The case. The case I received with the 300 is leather/nylon combo. In the time that I've worn this tool, the black finish is starting to wear off on the backside. I prefer the feel of the nylon case as it seems to have a more flat profile on my belt. This tool does NOT have scissors, as I've read complaints about this. I have personally have never needed it in a multitool. For a basic, heavy duty full size multitool, I highly recommend the Super Tool 300. I like it enough that I am going to buy another one (maybe the black oxide version) to keep in the truck. For the price offered, you can't go wrong or beat it when you consider other smaller multitools can cost almost twice as much. Great value. Thanks again, Leatherman, for another great tool.

I live in Tasmania, Australia and received my package today after a little over two weeks, so as you can image I was very excited when the mail arrived.
I bought my father an original Supertool years ago and had played around with a friends Supertool 200 which I really loved. I can only say I'm very disappointed with this tool - for a number of reasons I'll now explain. First thing; the packing box could have contained more packaging. It just had a single air-cell meaning the contents were more or less free jump around. They wer epacked very loosely. Incidentally I also bought a Smiths sharpener which is brilliant value. So these two items were wot very secure at all. Pretty darned poor actually and I've given feedback to Amazon about this. I removed my Leatherman Supertool 300 from it's little cardboard box and it was covered with fingerprints, grimy and franky very smudgy which instantly put me off. It kind of looks like someone had been playing around with it before despite it supposedly being brand new. It also had some black fibers embedded on it indicating someone had used it in a sheath before. I read another review somewhere on here where someone else had similar problems (with fingerprints etc.) with the same model so I guess it's not only me with this issue. The end of the pliers were ground off a little on one side more than the other. This means they weren't flush (neat) on the ends, one side was uneven. This has implications if I wanted to say wrap wire neatly around the end of the pliers. This is just bad quality control in anyone's language and is definitely a factory issue they need to look at. I rushed into Hobart and looked at a model in one of the shops. The pliers were perfectly neat and machined unlike what I received today. Arrghhh!! The tool when closed would not close tightly. The two parts of the handles flopped around loosely with a grap of say 3/4 inch. It was loose and the two handles would rattle and open quite freely especially in the sheath. How utterly annoying. As a contrast I bought a 4 dollar Chinese multitool last year. The thing is crap but even though, the handles close rock solid and tight much better than the Supertool I got today. This bothers me. Again it's quality control issue. The sheath is bad. Too wide for this model. Also when worn sideways the tool will definitely fall out. I guarantee it. The opening is too large and tool is heavy and it slides out as I tested it. You cannot prevent it. This is a really bad sheath guys, not a good design. The sheath will only fit a narrow belt. The sheath is a poor design for outdoor activity and EDC (forget about that). If I was in the Army I'd forget about it otherwise you're gonna look and your tool will be gone. Not good. It is also WAY heavier and chunkier than the other Supertools I've used and seen. Way too heavy for my belt. Okay, others say they don't mind the weight. Let me tell you: If a knife or tool is heavy you'll end up not wanting to carry it around. This thing is ridiculously heavy and cumbersome especially in the stupid sheath. It feels like carrying around a small brick. Guys, I appreciate some of you have had great experiences with this tool. The one I got today exhibited poor quality control and (at the very least) I definitely would have expected Amazon to check it out and make sure it was clean before sending. I am sending it back to Amazon ASAP. It will probably cose me $40 Australian Dollars to reship this so I feel a bit upset by this. But anyway my loss I guess. All of these problems could have been prevented and given I'm at the bottom of Australia I should have paid the extra cash and bought one locally. I may exchange this for a Leatherman Wave MAYBE from Amazon but like I said, if the same thing happens again I'd be really peeved off. I hope this review has helped. Best wishes and take care. Paul.

An upgrade over the Core and Super Tool 200, the Super tool 300 supports MASSIVE pliers that are much stronger than any other Leatherman. Also, the wire cutters appear to be removable which is a new feature.
Other than this, it isn't much different than a Super Tool 200 or Core... in other words, if you want new features, it doesn't deliver. Having said this, I still highly recommend it for the added plier strength and wire cutter flexibility. Quality is average, just like all modern Leathermans. This is not as well put together as the older Leathermans, but it is still a good (but not great) tool.

Best Leatherman I've owned so far...,

...and I've owned several versions.
Replaceable wire cutting blades are a great idea, especially since I screwed up my Leatherman Wave at one point, and had to spend hours with a diamond file to get it to open and close correctly. Good size for larger hands, oval jaws add gripping force, handles are rounded just enough to not cut your palm and fingers to shreds if have to grip something tightly, Philips head screwdriver is hardened so doesn't round off easily. Multipocket sheath that came with it was a nice bonus, holds the few things that the Leatherman doesn't have: small flashlight, compact razor knife (gerber), small Sharpie, and small crescent wrench. Great for day-to-day repair & maintenance (computer network guy) Also although not designed for it, the hex bit adapter that fits the Wave will work in this plier too. Recommended.

Blades open only from inside,

I'm actually about to purchase a different leatherman to replace this one. I absolutely love my Super Tool, but it does have one major flaw. To access the blades, you have to flip open the pliers, use a nail dent to pull out the blade, then flip the pliers closed. When I tried it out in the store, the salesperson recommended that I get a leatherman where you could access the blades without having to open the whole thing up, but I didn't take his advice. Now, after using this tool daily for over 10 years, I see his point. This tool has held up flawlessly, and is perfect in almost every way, but opening the knife blade on this (which is the one tool I use on this the most) is a major pain. It got bad enough that I would carry a separate knife that I could get out much quicker. I'm going to buy a Leatherman Wave instead for daily use, and keep the super tool in my car for infrequent use.
I would give this tool 5 stars if it had a blade accessible from the outside, but I can only give it 3 stars because it will bother you if you use it a lot.

The leatherman I purchased is an excellent product, one I use everyday. Previous to my purchase I had one for over 15 years and also used it on a daily basis. A few months ago I damaged my original while using it working on pasture fences. I had so much confidence in it that I often used it for jobs that it really wasn't meant for. Simply stated, it was my fault that it broke.
I immediately ordered a new tool and will continue to use the Leatherman tools because they're so reliable. I just need to realize that there are limits and need to be more aware of what I'm doing when I pull it from the sheath. The tool is made so well I assumed it was invincible.

The Leatherman is a great tool to have in the car for emergencies. I had gotten a nail in one of my tires and the Super tool-300 was perfect for getting it out.

i bought this as a backup to wear on my kit in Afghanistan, i recieved it and saw that it is a big fat beast and the carrying case looked to have been made by someone that doesn't spend a lot of time outdoors. If you can find the Super Tool 200, it's a lot more slimline and it's what i carry daily to fix anything.

I have had one of these for better than a year now, ever since my eldest son gave it to me for Christmas. I carry it constantly and it has provided me with a pocketful of tools for every occasion. The selection of tools is better than my orange Home Depot bucket! The only complaint I have is that the blade lock started getting stiff and some blades were not readily unlocked for folding.
Unfortunately I forgot to pack my original leatherman in my checked baggage last December, so I lost it to the BWI Security team. Going without it for a month, hoping I'd have a chance to redeem it, I felt totally naked. So I had to bite the bullet and order my replacement. The Super-Toll 300 is the best multi-tool I've ever had the pleasure of owning. I highly recommend it to anyone who is handy around the house or anyplace else that you might a screwdriver, saw, file, ruler (granted the 6" is short, but handy), needle nose pliers, wire cutter, et al. I even carried it in Europe last fall and came up with uses for it on a regular basis. Like my American Express Card, I won't leave home without it! Just next time, I'll check it to avoid security.

I have had a leatherman for years. The first leatherman I gave to my son and he took it to the military as an electronic tech. finding it extremely useful. Now it is used extensively in the military. Meanwhile I replaced that one with the super tool 300 (one of the original ones).
In Australia I found the police liked the super tool and I showed mine to friends there, that is why I bought it to send to my friend. My tool has been used hard for many years and has never need repairing despite having a lifetime guarantee which they honor with no questions. |
