Simple, Lightweight, and Reliable
Sometimes, you don't need a toothpick, a pair of tin snips, or toenail scissor--you just need a strong, sharp, reliable cutting blade. The Crater c33x is a streamlined, folding knife with a sturdy, locking blade. Its durable, 60-percent glass-filled nylon handle is shaped and balanced to sit comfortably in your hand. And weighing in at just 2.36 ounces, the c33x will rest snugly in your pocket or pack.

The in-handle storage system means you won't have to carry a sheath, and the knife's folding carabiner clip makes it easy to attach your knife to a belt loop or the side of your pack, so it's always on hand when you need it. Mariners who keep their tools on lines will have a special appreciation for this clip. And it does double-duty as a bottle-opener. You can also opt to secure your knife with the included removable pocket clip. In short, this knife was designed to meet the practical needs of active outdoorsmen, and it delivers.

Premium, US-Made Steel for Performance
A sharp knife is not only more useful than a dull knife, it's also safer and easier to control. A blade with a durable precision edge lets you make the cuts you want safely and quickly.

Crater Series knives are crafted out of US-made 420HC steel from Crucible Metals. This steel was selected by Leatherman because it provides excellent edge retention, which means your knife stays sharp longer. Plus 420HC is tough, not brittle, and it is corrosion resistant.

Crater Series knives are finished with a hollow grind, the same "premium" grind found on straight razors and some high-end kitchen cutlery. This grind technique creates a natural release when cutting, so materials don't stick to the knife, giving you a better cutting edge. The knife's full 2.6-inch blade provides plenty of versatility for cooking up backcountry meals, cutting rope to build the perfect bear hang, or even breaking down boxes to toss in the recycling.

Locking, Drop-Style Blade for Safety
A liner lock lets you secure the blade of your c33x in the open position, so you don't have to worry about it closing on your hand while you cut. This safety feature is especially important when slicing through tough materials like braided nylon rope. Having a liner lock instead of a traditional lockback system makes the c33x easier to open with one hand. It also ensures that it's easy to unlock the blade and close the knife. A conveniently placed thumb stud contributes to the ease of one-handed operation, too.

Leatherman uses blades shaped in a drop-style for all their c33x knives because they fit nicely in the handle of your knife when not in use. Plus, a drop-style blade is stronger than a clip point blade, which you might see on other pocket knives.

When it is time to sharpen your knife, you'll appreciate that Leatherman knives can be re-sharpened using standard methods. There are many ways to maintain a sharp blade, so you should be able to find one that works well for you. Sharpening stones, round files, and special kits (not included) can help ensure long-lasting performance.

About Leatherman: Time-Tested Survival Tools
The original Pocket Survival Tool, devised by mechanical engineer Tim Leatherman, hit the market in 1983. By 1993, Leatherman was selling more than one million tools a year. In the blockbuster movie "Speed," Keanu Reeves used a Leatherman to save the passengers on a doomed bus. Even MacGyver has been seen with one of these trusty tools. But their best reviews come from everyday people. The Leatherman survival tool is a mainstay of travelers, sailors, fishermen, hunters, backpackers, and scouts.

The simple, lightweight Crater Series knives draw on Leatherman's legacy. While the c33x knife doesn't feature the signature Leatherman pliers design, it is available in several multi-tool variations. If you enjoy the ease of sharpening a traditional straight blade knife, the c33 might be the perfect knife for you. Similarly, Leatherman offers the c33L for those who love the ease of a having a blade launcher, and the c33T, for those who utilize Phillips and flathead screwdrivers on a daily basis. Leatherman also offers the c33B, a multi-knife with an integrated bit driver.

All Leatherman tools, including the c33x Combo Straight/Serrated Blade Knife, are backed by a 25-year warranty.

I was looking for an EDC knife that would do the basics very well at a good price. The Crater C33x hits the nail on the head. At a price under $20 you get:

- A very solid 420HC combo blade
- A secure liner lock
- Phosphor bronze bushings
- A folding carabiner & bottle opener
- A pocket clip
- Fiberglass reinforced handle
- A 25 year warranty

It's a lot better than knives costing twice that much! A real steal.

I use it quite often at the office, and wouldn't think twice about using it around the house, while camping or even on the water (a carabiner is essential there).

The moderately sized blade is wide and sturdy, so it can take on big jobs safely and effectively. The partial serrations ensure quick cutting through pretty much anything. It opens smoothly and locks securely.

The handle is comfortable and provides a secure grip. The pocket clip isn't bothersome, but has sone trouble gripping over thick seams on the pocket rim.

The carabiner/bottle opener is a bit tricky to fold until you realize that you have to push it down. I really like it, as it allows you to hang the knife from anywhere (e.g. a lifejacket) and takes no space in the knife thanks to a very smart design (the blade goes through it when it's folded)

The smallish size is a bonus when it comes to using the knife in the city (as most will), looking much less threatening than a full sized folder. Friends and family won't be intimidated by it, and cops shouldn't give you much trouble. It looks like a tool, not a weapon.

And it's a Leatherman. For less than $20.

I have had this knife about 6 months now. I use it all the time. I carry it often. It is extremely lightweight but at the same time very well constructed and of high quality. Very sharp as shipped. Very versatile with the combo--serrated blade. Clip is handy for carrying in a pocket and providing easy access. Thumb stud took a little getting used to, but now is very easy to open with just one hand. Can't say anything bad about this knife--even the price is right.

update (Dec 2011), I just reviewed my Case trapperlock knife. I like both of these knives but hands down the Case is much higher quality (at higher cost as well). But for the cost, this Leatherman is a great knife and great value.

Very sharp and easy to sharpen
carbiner is cool and works as a bottle opener
slick small profile
Feels a little cheap
pocket clip loosens over time

I'm a firefighter and a small pocket clip knife is essential. I loved this when I first got it. Within a few weeks the pocket clip has distorted and loosened enough making this knife a "snag" waiting to happen. I retired it to the tackle box where I'm sure it will do fine next fishing season. Just wished I could use it for what I intended it for. I ended up replacing this one with a comparable Kershaw. So far so good.

The Crater c33x is my go-to knife for hiking/backpacking due to its compactness, lightness, and versatility - the straight edge is very sharp, great for slicing and whittling tasks; the serrated edge is effective for cutting cord and straps; the carabiner is a jack-of-many-trades, from opening bottles, pulling tent stakes, and even turning flat-head screws (using the thumb tab). Though stainless, the blade will rust a little if allowed to stay damp (e.g. in your pocket during a long rainy and sweaty day of hiking) more readily than other stainless blades I own, due to the carbon content of the 420HC steel. However, the high carbon content also translates to ease of sharpening, which is another plus in the field, and the rust is easily removed. The only reason my Crater doesn't see more everyday carry action is because it's not as comfortable in the pocket as my Spyderco: the pocket clip juts out a bit far and the edges on the clip are rough and sharpish; my Spydie, though much longer, is slimmer with a more rounded clip with better retention so I find it more comfortable for EDC. But for sub-20 bucks I can't complain, especially for an American product; it's an unbeatable value. And when I am carrying my Crater and there are beers to be opened, it makes the other knives at the party jealous.

Easy to open and super sharp and versatile. The combination of a clip and carabiner provides many ways to carry so you can always have it with you.

I rated this knife a five star rating for a reason.

This knife has an extremely sharp blade, the serrated edge is very sharp and does not have large ridges like some other knifes will. This Pocket knife is easy to flip out with your thumb, but if you drop the knife or pull the blade, it will not come out easily, which is very good for safety reasons.

The base of the knife is some type of plastic, it is strong and will not break, or scratch.

The clip on the knife took me at least a half hour to figure out how to push back in, I could not find any buttons or locks that kept it out. It turns out you need to push the clip toward the body of the knife and than fold it down. The clip will surely not unlock by itself, you need a few pounds of pressure to unlock the clip. The clip is very strong and can probably hold up to 100 pounds.

The pocket clip is sturdy with three screws to attach it to the body, it has a nice give so you can easily slide onto you pocket without it coming of.

Overall I now use this as my primary knife, it works great.
