Noticeable improvements: My well broken in 200 has the problem of flinging the blade out when I open the tool. They corrected this problem on the 300 by inserting a small detent to create a positive stop at the inner base of both the straight and serrated blades.
The cutaway to access either blade is much bigger. Makes it easier to open the blade, given the extra small bit of effort required with the addition of the detent stop and if you wear utility gloves.
The plier head is much stronger and wider with replaceable wire cutter blades. The plier jaws on the 300 are square cut and thicker instead of rounded over like the 200. (just remember to use threadlocker when you re-install the torx screw after blade replacement)
The depth of the handle is noticeably bigger, though not by much, adding a more solid, bulky feel in my hand. I have relatively large hands and it is very comfortable.
The phillips screwdriver is stronger with a more beefed up shank.
The saw blade is slightly wider, adding more strength.Read more ›
. VERY strong tool, and I'm really hard on my Leatherman products.
. Black Oxide Finish is holding up well, even though the surface layer scratches easily.
. An abundance of tools in this Leatherman. Need an oddball tool?! Something in here would work..
. Dangerously sharp blades! The first thing I had the opportunity to cut was my finger. Works well.
. File is high quality and doesn't wear easily.
. Haven't had to change the wire cutters yet, but they seem easy enough to change.
. Pliers are super strong. After they break in, one hand opening becomes simple enough.
. Velcro that holds the knife in the sheath is weak, and doesn't last with everyday use.
. Its heavy, but what do you expect when this much awesomeness is packed into a tool!
. Ruler can be difficult to read against the black finish.
. Some of the smaller drivers that are in between blades can be tough to get out. You have to be careful, or you can easily cut yourself if you don't pay attention. They haven't loosened up much even with regular use.
The pros clearly outweigh the cons. The first thing I recommend is ditching the sheath. Being that this tool is heavy, I purchased a Maxpedition Sheath.. and it keeps the Leatherman snug against my belt to where you forget its there. Solid and incredibly strong, it contours to the shape of the leatherman and keeps it secure.Read more ›
Replaceable wire cutting blades are a great idea, especially since I screwed up my Leatherman Wave at one point, and had to spend hours with a diamond file to get it to open and close correctly.
Good size for larger hands, oval jaws add gripping force, handles are rounded just enough to not cut your palm and fingers to shreds if have to grip something tightly, Philips head screwdriver is hardened so doesn't round off easily.
Multipocket sheath that came with it was a nice bonus, holds the few things that the Leatherman doesn't have: small flashlight, compact razor knife (gerber), small Sharpie, and small crescent wrench. Great for day-to-day repair & maintenance (computer network guy)
Also although not designed for it, the hex bit adapter that fits the Wave will work in this plier too.
