The Ramones are the first punk rock band. Other bands, such as the Stooges and the New York Dolls, came before them and set the stage and aesthetic for punk, and bands that immediately followed, such as the Sex Pistols, made the latent violence of the music more explicit, but the Ramones crystallized the musical ideals of the genre. By cutting rock & roll down to its bare essentials -- ... Read more in Amazon's Ramones Store

Editorial Reviews

Of course the Ramones' second album, Leave Home, is simply more of the same - 14 songs, including one oldie ("California Sun"), delivered at breakneck speed and concluding in under a half-hour. The Ramones have gotten slightly poppier, occasionally delivering songs like "I Remember You" that are cloaked neither in irony nor seedy rock & roll chic. Still, the biggest impressions are made by the cuts that strongly recall the debut, whether it's the ersatz Beach Boys of "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker," the sing along of "Pinhead," or the warped anthems "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment" and "Commando."

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Audio August 8, 2011
I am a big fan of the Ramones and have never owned anything of their's on vinyl so when I heard Rhino was remastering their first 4 LP's from the original master tapes and releasing them on 180 gram vinyl it made my mouth water. I own the remastered CDs and they are some of the best remastered CDs I have heard, low compression and very clear. I expected the vinyl to , at least, be as good as those and it disappoints me to say that "Leave Home", at least, does not live up to those expectations.

The first thing I noticed was that the vocals on some songs were distorted and at first I put it down that maybe that's just how they originally sounded. However, on some songs they were not and on the CD none of them are. I had read on another site that someone encountered the same problem with distortion but only on side two of this release. In my experience as both sides went on the vocals got more and more distorted. I own a very high quality turntable so this I know is the record and not my equipment or any case of inner groove distortion. I also do not think it's just a defective copy as it appears to be the mastering in general. By about the 4th song on side one, not very far into the record at all, you begin to notice it so that by the time of "Pinhead" it's not good at all. The same thing happened on side two.

Other than the vocal issue, the music itself is not nearly as clear as that on the CD. I LOVE vinyl and there very few instances where I feel a remastered CD trumps a remastered vinyl but in this case it's no contest. The CD wins easily as the presence of the music on the CD is better and the clarity of everything going on, from the instrumentation to the vocals just flat out sounds better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fave April 28, 2014

The Ramones changed my life. I was 14 and the second the needle hit the grooves of "Blitzkrieg Bop" it was all over. It was what I was waiting for all my 14 years on the planet and didn't even know it. But this album is my favorite Ramones album ever. It's a bit more polished than the 1st but it kicks ass. And it always will. Thanks, guys.

Stop reading and go buy this already (and all their other records). Seriously, you don't need an explanation why this rules, just listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ramones at their Best November 16, 2013
I own both the debut album and Leave Home and the audio is excellent. I don't know what these other reviewers are talking about, but they might want to check the needle on their record players. If you are a fan of punk rock, this is a must have album and probably the Ramones best album. I'm partial to Rocket to Russia, but this one gets it done too.
