Book Description

April 1, 2010

'Today I choose the light.'

Jennifer Storm's first memoir, Blackout Girl: Growing Up and Drying Out in America, tells the haunting story of her downward spiral into addiction that began when she was raped at twelve years old. She remained on a dangerous, self-destructive path for ten dark years, until one day she awoke in the hospital after attempting to commit suicide and realized she needed help.

Now, Leave the Light On: A Memoir of Recovery and Self-Discovery offers a deeper look into Jennifer's inspiring story of survival and transformation. With fearless honesty, she chronicles her journey as she embarked upon a new life in recovery, finally facing her traumatic past, her buried emotions, and her long-hidden truth about her sexuality. A unique blend of addiction recovery and coming-out story, this book provides a positive, encouraging example for those who are facing similar adversities. Jennifer holds nothing back in this courageous and insightful memoir.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In the follow-up to Blackout Girl, her memoir of alcohol addiction, author Storm continues her compelling journey to fulfillment as a functional, substance-free human being. Fresh from a 28-day rehabilitation program, Storm finds she must shed many friends and routines from her past in order to work her 12-Step AA program and move forward in her life. Along the way, Storm chronicles her day-to-day in its frustrations and mundane details, but also faces a life-threatening medical emergency, comes out as a lesbian, has a first gay sexual encounter, plans the first-ever Penn State Queer Prom, and finds her passion as an activist. Throughout, she relates her story with candor, humor, and insight, making this an engaging and occasionally thought-provoking memoir of growing up, getting over past mistakes, and extending oneself to others and the world at large.

From Booklist

Storm details her recovery and self-discovery after attempted suicide put her in the hospital and forced her to face her emotional pain, which partly stems from childhood rape. In short, easily flowing chapters, she relates her sexual confusion, growing comfort with 12-step meetings as she begins recovery, and a violent encounter at a party with visiting friends that demonstrates her removal from her old life. Every step of recovery took her “further and further away from the friends I thought I had and further away from the person I once was.” For the first time, she achieved emotional intimacy, in a sexless, “pseudo-lesbian” relationship; became a successful college student; and participated in campus life. Recovery held even after an emergency surgery required post-procedural morphine. Throughout her journey through recovery to professional social activism, she received her parents’ emotional and financial support and their unconditional love. Although the still-young Storm undoubtedly will face future trials, her book’s happy ending satisfies. Many may find solace and inspiration in it. --Whitney Scott

Leave the Light On: A Memoir of Recovery and Self-Discovery

This was a truly amazing book. Jennifer Storms first book, Blackout Girl was an amazingly honest memoir, and the follow up book was just what I wanted to read after I finished Blackout Girl. There are not many books out there at all on recovery memoirs. Most substance abuse memoirs end with rehab, but Storm dedicated a whole book to her recovery, the bad and the good times. I recommend all her writings to everyone I know!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart choice for YA and Adults!, June 15, 2010

Happy Librarian (Philadelphia, Pa United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Leave the Light On: A Memoir of Recovery and Self-Discovery (Paperback)
As a companion book to Blackout Girl: Growing Up and Drying Out in America, Leave the Light On is equally powerful and well written. Using brief chapters, Storm relates her story of post-recovery life in a relaxed prose that feels more like an old friend talking with you than an author relating the facts of her life. This casual tone does not take away from the poignant moments that helped define Storm's life and put her on a path to becoming a functioning human being. Sometimes sad, sometimes laugh-out-loud funny, and sometimes frightening, the story is one that is easy to relate to because the narration is so personable and straightforward. A solid choice for young adults and adults. Reading Blackout Girl: Growing Up and Drying Out in America first is not a must, but is helpful to better understand the long road the author has taken.
