5.0 out of 5 stars My new favorite book, July 31, 2006
This review is from: Leave No Nurse Behind: Nurses Working with disAbilities (Paperback)
This was the best book I have ever read. I could relate as a nurse with a relatively new disability. The book was filled with humor, inspiration, and was extremely informative.
I will be buying this book for all of my favorite nurses. I read and enjoyed Echo Herons book titled Tending Lives, however Leave No Nurse Behind topped it. Donna Maheady should be on the New York Times Bestseller with this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Topic , Not Just For Nurses, July 19, 2006
This review is from: Leave No Nurse Behind: Nurses Working with disAbilities (Paperback)
A wonderful and informative read. I have spent my career working for people with disabilities and I am also a Nurse. This book is not just for those with nursing backgrounds or aspirations; it gives information about coping with a disability that could be used in any occupation. I loved it........Jeanne Penney

5.0 out of 5 stars Maheady Does It Again, July 12, 2006

Once again, Donna Maheady brings issues of the differently-abled person to light. Previously , she had shed light on Nursing Students with disAbilities and their efforts to go to and finish Nursing School. In this tome, Maheady takes us into the lives of 11 differently-abled working Nurses-their struggles to find employment, and to stay employed. These Nurses are dedicated, loving and caring about their career, families and their patients. Even though I was honored and priveledged to be selected as one of the "Eleven", these stories touch me. They bring tears to my eyes, no matter how many times I read them. This book should be read and read often, by Nursing Executives, Nursing Recruiters, and other Nurses. By reading these stories, you will see a glimpse into the life of a Nurse who goes to work every day- no matter what the obstacle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Readability, Important Topic, July 8, 2006
This review is from: Leave No Nurse Behind: Nurses Working with disAbilities (Paperback)
This is really a wonderful book, and not just for nurses. Each chapter is a vignette from a real nurse with real life health problems; like a mini-biography and a resolution as to how the nurse deals with the illness or disability and continues to work in nursing. Most people can relate to having a chronic health problem and holding a job. The stories are inspiring, funny, and remind us all how important a positive attitude is to a successful and happy life. Nurses especially should read this book about their colleagues; whether a nurse is healthy or not, his/her coworker may be dealing with issues that affect the workplace. More than an academic book, this is a real-life story book about some very inspiring people who, in spite of their own problems, choose as a profession to help others in need. I found the stories really touching and interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Leave No Nurse Behind, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Leave No Nurse Behind: Nurses Working with disAbilities (Paperback)
This book had a lot of very useful information, and many inspiring stories. It is worth reading even if you are not planning on going into nursing. The insights offered here for people with disabilities can be applied to many fields.

This book is a marvelous reference for nurses with disabilities. I read this book because I am a nurse who has experienced some disability issues. I enjoyed reading the variety of personal stories because they were positive and inspirational. This book shows that disabled nurses can provide a valuable contribution to our health care system. I have this book and frequently refer back to it for encouragement.

This book is most helpful and inspiring for nurses and those considering the field who want to discover how others have creatively met challenges related to their disabilities. As the book illustrates, nursing offers the flexibility that can knock down barriers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Leave No Nurse (nor Yourself!) Behind, June 16, 2008
This review is from: Leave No Nurse Behind: Nurses Working with disAbilities (Paperback)
Written about nurses by nurses themselves, this book speaks to all of us. In a format blending story telling we know as nurses with the plain, sometimes harsh truth about barriers, 11 nurses described how they worked their way into the nursing profession, or fought to remain after health issues threatened their career. "Leave No Nurse Behind" is a positive outlook on the strength of determination and "Abilities" of nurses representing our profession proudly. Each chapter's 'Workable Wisdom' highlight practical tips flowing from the reading. And lucky Chapter 13 is excellent "Future Planning" encouraging us to look at our own vulnerability (Yes we are all "TABs": Temporarily Able Bodied..never know when we may be the one to be left behind). Time to begin exploring, highlighting, and applying the lessons learned and guidelines to develop similar resources and links in Canada! P.S. I've purchased a copy to donate to my alma mater.

5.0 out of 5 stars Proud Mother, September 21, 2006

I'm a proud mother of one of the nurses in the book and she described her struggles with such maturity and strength. It is an excellent book for all mother's of children with disabilities. I had no such encouragement as the mother of a newborn........but as you read, nothing is impossible when you believe in yourself as my daughter always has.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!!!!, November 19, 2006
This review is from: Leave No Nurse Behind: Nurses Working with disAbilities (Paperback)
Leave No Nurse Behind: Nurses Working with disAbilities by Donna Carol Maheady ARNP EdD I love her book it is a blessing to me because I am a future nursing student and I have a disability I have had people tell me I can not do it because of my disability. At first I did not think anything would be in her book that related to my disability but I was so wrong. I love this book and I recommend it to others that have a disability that want to be nurse.
