4.0 out of 5 stars A fine debut from a promising band
The Belgian boys of Soulwax flew all the way to Los Angeles for the recording of their debut album. The effort, with the help of Kriss Goss (from Masters of Reality), has paid off. It's a CD with varying moods, now quiet and melancholy, then bluesy with raw guitars on top. My personal favourites? The single Kill Your Darling is a steaming rocker which still does it for...

3.0 out of 5 stars An okay album
This is Soulwax first album. It's a nice album, but what you really want is their next newer album: MuchAgainstEveryonesAdvice. That is a ***** five star album. This one is okay, but it's not definate enough.

The single Kill Your Darling is a steaming rocker which still does it for me any time; Caramel and Daisy Duke are some of the more ballad-ish (they never quite get mellow or really sad) and more restrained songs, carried by Stephen De Waele's velvet voice. Finally, When The Rooster Crows is true blues, with dirty but functional guitarwork. Love it. These guys have a lot going for them: they don't sound like rip-offs from any other band I ever heard, even though their album is firmly implanted in the blues/rock tradition. They have the energy, the skill, and the ambition to make it... Up to you to decide if they will. By the way: the new album is out in Europe. And it's even better. More controlled, more varied and more daring. But this is still a good buy, don't worry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice kick off, September 1, 1999

debut album for one one of Belgium's best bands. And in more ways than one is this obvious: the producing, the song writing, the mood; it is just not "up to point" yet. What you do sense however; is an amazing potential. And they confirmed with their second CD (which is indeed awesome, and a 5star+). You can find some good songs here, but some you'll just fwd through. Still; as a debut this one counts. A nice edition if you're into European alternative music, cause this band is setting the tune!!

4.0 out of 5 stars If I gave it five, I couldn't say the next album is better, July 8, 2001

If your looking for this album now, then chances are, you probably already own their second album. If this is the case, then I would certainly recommend you go ahead with this purchase! "Leave the Story Untold" is a really good listen. It is more upbeat than the second album yet also has a lot of the sophistication and smoothness that makes Soulwax so good. It is clear that the band have not yet found their style, but they are well on their way. The main difference between this and the next album is probably the lack of the keyboard presence which is in "Much Against...". There are some really fantastic songs here that you will find yourself playing over and over in your head. Sadly, the album has been discontinued now, so good luck in finding it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!, October 9, 2008

I'm relatively new to Soul Wax, but I have all of their mainstream albums now. I simply love them! Sometimes they're a little Devo, sometimes grunge, but always a good buff and wax for the soul!
