5.0 out of 5 stars Nebraska's Denver has got it right, February 6, 2004
By
Brian Neal (Wilmington, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Leave Your Name (Audio CD)
I first heard about Denver Dalley (guitarist for Conor Oberst's side project 'Desaparecidos')'s side project, Statistics, when he went on tour with Rilo Kiley the summer of 2003. After seeing his show and hearing the EP, I was immediately hooked. The beautiful guitar melodies layered over rich electronic samples and haunting lyrics had me instantly drawn in, and I've been thirsting for more ever since.

I purchased "Leave Your Name," Statistics first full length CD, at a show they played in Chapel Hill, NC. After hearing some of the new tracks live, I knew I was going to enjoy the CD, and was completely right. From the powerful opening track "Sing a Song" to the beautiful piano melody of "Chairman of the Board" to the haunting last track "Circular Memories," this CD offers everything the EP had and much more. The raw unbridled energy of Desaparecidos can be felt through Dalley's own work, but it is kept in check and made into something even more stunning and beautiful. While the lyrics may seem to lack depth at times, the intent of each song is clear, and you can't help but enjoy what you're listening to.

Overall, I would give this CD 4.6 out of 5 stars. If you're a fan of low-fi, hardcore, or anything in between, there will be something in "Leave Your Name" for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars more stars next time, May 8, 2004
This review is from: Leave Your Name (Audio CD)
In the sleeve notes it says 'written and performed by Denver Dalley', telling us that its a one man show, Denver playing almost all instruments, singing and producing.
I think 'leave your name' is indie rock like the faster louder songs of sparklehorse or perhaps nada surf. There's invention too, although this album has its feet firmly planted in the melody that a guitar and bass can make, there's sections where electronics have a prominent role. Synths buzz and hum giving an 80's sound along side all of the other new and classical sounds. We also get a perfect selection of loud and quiet, fast and slow tracks.
Its uplifting stuff at times, and we often hear a new twist on classic indie/rock melodies that sink and then soar. Its a gem that wont be heard on radio much as its on a tiny litte label,
BUT!! and its a big but, the lyrics on here are stupid, I have not heard such bad lyrics in a long time 'claymation is dead and gone - everything's cg' (computer graphics)
I love the tunes on here but i cant take any of the lyrics seriously, dever lacks in this area and needs help. Once he gets help he will be known for albums of zwan proportions, not ones with silly lyrics.

I heard this album when Pandora decided to play it on my station. Once I heard one song I had to get it. I'm glad I did.
