Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

ea. vol: photogs. by Yuko Sato. 47p. glossary. index. (Natural Science Bks.). CIP. Lerner. 1986. PLB $12.95. Grade 4-7 Colorfully illustrated introductions to their subjectshow leaves change color in autumn and how some insects communicate by producing chirps. The importance of leaves as the food-producing unit of a tree is defined, and the process of photosynthesis is described in the text and in a diagram. The chemical changes brought about in the leaf by cold weather and the resulting color change from green to the autumnal colors of yellow, orange, and red are described. Chirping Insects explains how certain insects produce sounds with their legs or wings to communicate with other members of their species. Although some of the photographs have been used in other books in this series (Dallinger's Grasshoppers Lerner, 1981, for example), they are bright, detailed close-ups of many insects. Neither book has a table of contents, but each contains an index and a helpful glossary/pronunciation guide.Frances E. Millhouser, Arlington County Libraries, Va.
