Adapted by the 19th century Tibetan master from elegant 11th century Sanskrit text in elegiac verse by Kashmiri poet Ksemendra, these one hundred and eight Jataka Tales (each a clear teaching on karma) celebrate the power of action motivate by kindness, compassion and wisdom. Knowledge of the workings of karma and the development of wisdom and compassion form the heart of the Buddhist path which is so attractive to the West today. The Jataka Tales illustrate the past lives of the Buddha were cause and effect follow each other so closely that their relationship cannot be misconstrued. Entertaining, easy to comprehend, and instructive, these stories were and are an essential teaching tool for presenting complex philosophical truths to disciples of Buddhism with widely varying degrees of understanding.
