True Peter Gabriel Fan,
By A Customer
This review is from: Leaves From The Tree: A Tribute To The Music Of Peter Gabriel (Audio CD)
I thought, after reading other fans' reviews, that this would be a decent cd. Part of the awesomeness of Peter Gabriel is the passion he expresses in his voice. Adding a techno backbeat and wimpy voice singing a masterpiece, doesn't make a great tribute. The only redeeming quality of the disc is that it's still Peter Gabriel's music(kinda).

A Nice Reinterpretation,
By A Customer

Well, as with most tributes, there is a fine line between homage and horrid... this compilation seems to do a good job of not ruining what I consider to be "perfect" songs. They do, however, reinterpret the songs somewhat drastically - these are not strict cover tunes! Very electronic - very dancey... I am an avid fan of world music, rock music, and electronic music so this is my cup of tea, so to speak. It may or may not be yours :)

not what I had hoped,

I remember hearing a tribute to Sarah Mclaughlin once that made me shiver, it was that good. This one is so far away from PG music that it hardly even resembles it. I only really like the leaf on the cover of the case.

Tribute / Interpretations,

This project seems a bit too far off the beaten track for some. The tracks are interpreations rather than literal readings, so if you want to hear PG playing PG then buy a PG CD. On the other hand the man doesn't stand still and neither should his music. Many of these take the songs in a dancey direction. Some are more successful than others. With this many artists involved it's a little a mixed bag and as happens on these sorts of things it is not as cohesive as a PG album is. Nevertheless if you have an open mind and no expectations it's interesting.

What's with all of the farting techno beats?,

I am a fan of (and own) Peter Gabriel's entire catalog, enjoy tribute records made to other artists and even like some you-tube posted renditions of Peter Gabriel's songs.I listened to this entire disc, and tried to give it a chance. However, I have to say that this record stinks. Wow. I did not know if you can butcher that many songs on one disc and have it be commercially viable. Even for techno freaks and world music flavor of the month types, I don't know who can stand listening to this album more than once. In a phrase, they collectively tried to hard, and failed to improve, or even have interesting takes on old PG stand-bys. I'd pass on this one.

Perfect Tribute,
By MM "kidtopia" (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Leaves From The Tree: A Tribute To The Music Of Peter Gabriel (Audio CD)
I always loved Peter Gabriel's music, and never thought there was a need to 'pay tribute.' But LEAVES FROM THE TREE is so much more. These are fabulous pieces of music in their own right. It should really be called INSPIRED BY, because of the originality and style of all these new artists. And the final cut on the CD "Freedom Now", isn't actually a PG song at all, but a moving and groovy tribute to PG's song 'Biko' with the voices of Nelson Mandela, and Biko himself that I thought was absolutely haunting!I RECOMMEND this CD to anyone who loves PG, modern electronica, or just some damn great music.
