I absolutely adored this book. I stayed up late into the night finishing it because I couldn't put it down! I've been desperate to find more books like this - books like Emily Giffin's that I like to call "smart" chick lit. Just because I'm looking for a lighthearted and entertaining read, it doesn't mean I want to sacrifice great writing, quality character development, and a thoughtful plot with depth. Em Barrett gets this and she totally delivers. I can't wait to read what she writes next. Also, apart from being a touching and engaging story, with real characters, experiences and emotions I could relate to, it's also a perfect summer read. I was stuck in the city on a sticky summer weekend, and Barrett's writing transported me to Green Island -- the golden afternoon sun, the sparkling water, the warm summer breeze...and the nostalgia for those cottage friends and the sense of shared history that always sticks with you. Five stars for sure...I'm jealous of all of you that haven't read it yet!

"Leaving Green Island" seems like the perfect book to read on the beach with your feet in the sand.

The story sucked me in from the very first page. Brecken, the main character, is a young lawyer in Chicago with a creepy boss and a job she doesn't like but can't afford to lose. In some shape or form, we've all been there. Without giving too much away, her life takes a dramatic turn when over a few days, she becomes engaged and then encounters Reed Whalen, a mysterious ex-boyfriend who broke her heart. Barrett builds up the mystery surrounding Reed throughout the first part of the book and I was scratching for clues as to who he really is and why he disappeared. Sidenote - whenever I read a book I always think in my head about which actors should play the characters if they make it into a movie. I have a few ideas for Brecken but I feel like Taylor Kitsch from Friday Night Lights would make the perfect Reed Whalen.

The story cuts back and forth between the present and the past, when Brecken met Reed while on vacation with her friend on Green Island. Most of the flashbacks are set on Green Island, which seems like a wonderful vacation spot. The present action takes place in Chicago. If you're from the Midwest, you will appreciate all of the small touches which indicate the author knows this area well. There are also several funny pop culture references, including a great shoutout to the original "Beverly Hills 90210."

I don't want to give too much of the story away, but by the second half of the book, I was reading as fast as I could to get to the end and find out what happened. $2.99 for this book is a steal. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

I was absolutely dumbfounded when I saw this is the #30,303 most downloaded book on Amazon. Then I realized it is a new release and just picking up steam, much like a freighter leaving Green Island for the big city of wind. I didn't have an e-reader, but when I heard that Em Barrett was finally going semi-public with one of her underground coffee shop masterpieces, I splurged for one. I can't find any other novels of hers on Amazon, but i've heard there are a few others out there? Has this always been her pen name? Anyways, to hell with the critics, give me Fifty shades of Green Island!

I'm not a plot spoiler but I was shocked by all the ALCOHOL being given to under aged kids (by their parents, kids who continued drinking and getting drunk throughout the book. Was that necessary to even put in this book? The F bomb totally didn't need to be in the story. I ended up speed reading to get past have the crap that didn't need to be there to be a good love story and ONLY at 90% did I finally slow down and finish the book. I'm actually surprised I did finish. I've lost too many loved ones to alcoholism to enjoy such a story. I should have just deleted at the beginning. MY BAD!

This book is amazing. I hope that everyone will read it, because it really is that good! The writing is perfection the characters are easy to love and the storyline is fantastic. It's so much fun to read a book that draws you in from the first page. This book covers 10+ years of life and love. Em Barrett, I hope you will be writing many more books. The ending to this book is perfect, although if you wanted to write another story with these characters you wouldn't get an argument from me! I've ready A LOT of books this summer and this one is in my top 3. Thanks for writing such a great story! :)

I absolutely loved Leaving Green Island - truly couldn't put it down after reading the first few pages! It's one of those light-hearted yet sentimental stories that will bring you back to your high school/college days. The author's writing style will have you feeling connected to the lives of each character which, in my opinion, is the sign of an excellent book!

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to get lost in an exciting love story. I enjoyed it so much that I couldn't put it down until I finished it! I laughed and cried, in a good way! The perfect read for a day on the beach or to cozy up with on a cold winter day.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

This is a wonderful contemporary romance that I really enjoyed.

Brecken Pereira is a wonderful character. She is an Associate in a law firm, and engaged to a doctor. I liked her very much, but wanted to shake her every so often, because she made some questionable decisions. She has some wonderful friends and roommates that keep her grounded, but the sudden return of an ex has her completely confused.

Reed Whalen is a jerk! Sorry, but that's my opinion. He may be gorgeous, rich and charming, and have an excuse for his terrible behaviour, but still, if I was Brecken, I don't think I would have been as forgiving. However, he does have a few redeeming qualities.

This is a book that I would not normally have picked up if I had seen it on the bookshelf in a store; not that I've got anything against the cover, or even the blurb for that matter. However, when the author offered me the chance to read this book, I thought it would be a nice change from my usual choice of paranormal romances. I'm glad I took the chance, because this story was a delight to read. The story is told from Brecken's point of view and has several flash backs to her teen's, when she spent two magical summers on Green Island, with her best friend Lizzy.
This is not only a romance, but a story of friendship. I loved seeing Brecken and Lizzy's friendship blossom and grow. They are both lucky to still be friends into adulthood. Not many friendships survive beyond school, but these two are more like sisters than friends.
