The story sucked me in from the very first page. Brecken, the main character, is a young lawyer in Chicago with a creepy boss and a job she doesn't like but can't afford to lose. In some shape or form, we've all been there. Without giving too much away, her life takes a dramatic turn when over a few days, she becomes engaged and then encounters Reed Whalen, a mysterious ex-boyfriend who broke her heart. Barrett builds up the mystery surrounding Reed throughout the first part of the book and I was scratching for clues as to who he really is and why he disappeared. Sidenote - whenever I read a book I always think in my head about which actors should play the characters if they make it into a movie. I have a few ideas for Brecken but I feel like Taylor Kitsch from Friday Night Lights would make the perfect Reed Whalen.
The story cuts back and forth between the present and the past, when Brecken met Reed while on vacation with her friend on Green Island. Most of the flashbacks are set on Green Island, which seems like a wonderful vacation spot. The present action takes place in Chicago. If you're from the Midwest, you will appreciate all of the small touches which indicate the author knows this area well. There are also several funny pop culture references, including a great shoutout to the original "Beverly Hills 90210."
I don't want to give too much of the story away, but by the second half of the book, I was reading as fast as I could to get to the end and find out what happened. $2.99 for this book is a steal. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

I enjoyed this book! A down to earth, but a bit predictable. Looking forward to reading more from Ms Barrett.Published 6 months ago by Curlcue
Compelling...hard to put down. And Em Barrett's next story "The Almosts" is even better...carrying on with some of the characters in Leaving Green Island.Published 8 months ago by Sherry

This book is an entertaining read for young adult women. Although there is way too much focus on drinking by young people, the story was a nice love story proving that you can... Read morePublished 8 months ago by treaves
There was nothing about this book that I liked. Too much drinking and loose morals. I do not plan to read any other books by this author.Published 8 months ago by Betty
