Book Description

** "If you enjoy Emily Giffin or Jennifer Weiner, then add Em Barret to your list!" ~The Indie Bookshelf review, Sept. 1, 2012 **

More than simply a modern love story, Leaving Green Island is a poignant yet lighthearted tale of friendship, family and the search for a place to belong in the complex world of today's twenty-something women.

With a new job at a prestigious Chicago law firm and an engagement ring on her finger, everything seems to be falling into place for Brecken Pereira these days. However, all this perfection quickly unravels when Reed Whalen, Brecken’s first love, unexpectedly resurfaces. The complicated history of the enigmatic Reed unfolds as the two summers that Brecken spent as a teenager on posh, exclusive Green Island in northern Michigan are interspersed with her relatable and humorous modern day trials and tribulations.

After Reed's reappearance, Brecken is torn between her longing for the past and the life she has carefully built for herself since Reed vanished years before. Her true-to-life and complex relationships with her two best friends provide the backbone that supports Brecken, both as the life she knows quickly dissolves around her and as she struggles to pick up the pieces.

This unputdownable novel is certain to pull on the heartstrings of anyone who ever had a first love.

{This book contains underage drinking and a bit of explicit language and sexual content.}

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Summer Read! July 23, 2012

I absolutely adored this book. I stayed up late into the night finishing it because I couldn't put it down! I've been desperate to find more books like this - books like Emily Giffin's that I like to call "smart" chick lit. Just because I'm looking for a lighthearted and entertaining read, it doesn't mean I want to sacrifice great writing, quality character development, and a thoughtful plot with depth. Em Barrett gets this and she totally delivers. I can't wait to read what she writes next. Also, apart from being a touching and engaging story, with real characters, experiences and emotions I could relate to, it's also a perfect summer read. I was stuck in the city on a sticky summer weekend, and Barrett's writing transported me to Green Island -- the golden afternoon sun, the sparkling water, the warm summer breeze...and the nostalgia for those cottage friends and the sense of shared history that always sticks with you. Five stars for sure...I'm jealous of all of you that haven't read it yet!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Beach Read! July 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Leaving Green Island" seems like the perfect book to read on the beach with your feet in the sand.

The story sucked me in from the very first page. Brecken, the main character, is a young lawyer in Chicago with a creepy boss and a job she doesn't like but can't afford to lose. In some shape or form, we've all been there. Without giving too much away, her life takes a dramatic turn when over a few days, she becomes engaged and then encounters Reed Whalen, a mysterious ex-boyfriend who broke her heart. Barrett builds up the mystery surrounding Reed throughout the first part of the book and I was scratching for clues as to who he really is and why he disappeared. Sidenote - whenever I read a book I always think in my head about which actors should play the characters if they make it into a movie. I have a few ideas for Brecken but I feel like Taylor Kitsch from Friday Night Lights would make the perfect Reed Whalen.

The story cuts back and forth between the present and the past, when Brecken met Reed while on vacation with her friend on Green Island. Most of the flashbacks are set on Green Island, which seems like a wonderful vacation spot. The present action takes place in Chicago. If you're from the Midwest, you will appreciate all of the small touches which indicate the author knows this area well. There are also several funny pop culture references, including a great shoutout to the original "Beverly Hills 90210."

I don't want to give too much of the story away, but by the second half of the book, I was reading as fast as I could to get to the end and find out what happened. $2.99 for this book is a steal. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book before summer ends! July 14, 2012

Awesome! Em Barrett is a natural storyteller with a keen understanding of life, love, friendship, and the magnetic pull of the past. Leaving Green Island drew me in with its subtle humor and fluid prose, and it wasn't long before I was hooked reading about Brecken Pereira's unforgettable experiences as an outsider navigating the unfamiliar world of a wealthy vacation community and the confusion she later faces when her first love from Green (as the residents call it) comes crashing back into her life as a young lawyer and musician a decade later. Barrett's captivating plot, multi-dimensional characters, and well-placed references to the sights and sounds of the late `90s Midwest and present-day Chicago make Leaving Green Island an absolutely delightful read from start to finish. Five stars - you should definitely check it out this summer!

Bios are so tough...! Let's see, I grew up outside Detroit and then went to college and grad school at the University of Michigan. I've been living in Chicago for five years (hard to believe!) and I love it here.

I'm a new mom and a writer with a day job. Right now I'm busy working on a sequel to Leaving Green Island and trying to get my daughter to sleep for more than five minutes at a time!!

Big fan of fountain Cokes and hoodies.
