I love this record, its been in regular rotation for 6 months. The melodies are so catchy, and the harmonies and production are great as well. The sound is mostly acoustic, and the subject matter is pretty wholesome, so it is pleasant and appropriate listening in varied company (like grandparents and little kids). Above all the music just makes you feel good - especially songs like "They Were Here" and "In the Countryside" - it's fun and playful, yet smart. I also really like the Benjy's sense of humor, look him up on Youtube and see what I mean...

Simply an outstanding debut! It is so encouraging to hear young songwriters like Sufjan Stevens, Joanna Newsom and now Benjy Ferree - each with their own melodic key to the kingdom. Ferree's music comes at you from so many directions - T-Rex rock on Dogkillers! to chamber pop lullaby on In The Woods - each song a self-contained, hook-laden wonder. This is craftsmanship folks - raw but unerringly right. I can hardly wait to hear where he goes next. Thanks to Joey Burns of Calexico for recommending him. I happily second that.

This was a wonderful discovery. Excellent from beginning to end. Will not event try to describe it musically, but just the cover art
should entice anyone to give it a try.Oh, and then you will have to try it again and again!

I didn't know what to expect when I bought this album, so that meant that I had no expectations for what it might be. This allowed me to be blown away by this whole album. The songs have a kind of unfinished quality to them, as though he recorded these songs with the intent of cleaning and polishing them later but then decided that he preferred the earthen sound that leaving them be brought out in them. His voice is like that of a softer spoken Jack White.

This album reminds me of better times.

warning: with one listen, "in the countryside" and "the desert" are sure to be buried in your brain all day.
this fits the domino/drag city web almost like a missing piece.
more upbeat than smog and oldham--not as goofy as the silver jews.
[don't get me wrong--i love all three of them as well!]
don't pass this up.
top ten of the year? methinks benjy here might make it.
