Book Description

What if advertisements ruled the world?

Taylor and Barrett maybe cousins, but they're from different worlds. Taylor lives in high-tech luxury, the daughter of top advertising specialists. Barrett was raised by his uncle in an ecocult called Simplicity. When his uncle dies, Barrett is whisked away to live with Taylor and her power parents.

Barrett is deeply distressed by the "Chattering World." Here, invasive advertising screams out from improbable places- on the sides of cars, on the bathroom mirror, even on the shirts of his teachers. Taylor, on the other hand, loves it and wants her "farmie" cousin to embrace it, too.

Barrett soon discovers that his aunt and uncle have a hidden agenda: there is a lotto gain from finding out the effects of advertising on an untouched mind. When Barrett's worst suspicions are confirmed, only Taylor, and the horrible secrets he discovers about her family, can expose the truth. To do so, she must turn her back on everything she's been raised to believe.

Thrilling and thought-provoking, Leaving Simplicity takes readers into a wildly driven consumer society that seems only a heartbeat away from our own.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enthralling presentation of a possible future, August 21, 2010

This review is from: Leaving Simplicity (Paperback)
"Leaving Simplicity" was not a particularly sophisticated read, and it is not that well written. That said, the ideas it proposed about the direction our society is headed in relation to advertising, and the amount of detail the author included to illustrate the crazy "chattering" that is haunting in its possibility was enough to make this a good read. It dragged in some places, because neither narrating character really felt like a realistic portrayal of the teenage psyche, but again it was an enthralling idea that kept the story moving forward. It was very fast paced, and ended a little too quickly, not to mention too neatly, but I would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling and insightful near-future horror story, April 21, 2008
This review is from: Leaving Simplicity (Hardcover)
Pretty great YA book!

Set in a near future where corporations work with the Ads-4-Life Council to ensure that every citzen is a productive consumer, Barrett is a freak- he was raised on an isolated compound by a 'cult' who rejected consumer society for a life of almost Amish spareness. When his uncle there dies, he must leave Simplicity for the Chattering World, where his condition as an advertising virgin makes him incredibly valuable to the marketers who study the psychology of persuasion- including his aunt, who heads the Ads-4-Life Council and is hoping for a major presidential appointment.

Taylor, Barrett's cousin has always had everything- but is she who she thinks she is?

An exciting story that leaves the reader with a heightened sense of awareness of how close we really are to this dystopia, and how far away simplicity truly is.
