Book Description

A very practical way to learn Lebanese

This is a Lebanese Arabic phrasebook, in a sense that it is designed to both:
1- Give you all you need to know to get by speaking Lebanese when travelling to Lebanon
2- Offer you a very practical and easy way of learning the dialect

Method found to be very efficient by students

The method and phrases used in this book have been developing since 2011 through my teachings of the Lebanese dialect through video lessons on youtube, as well as private lessons on skype.
They have been tweaked and are constantly evolving through the feedback of the students, focusing on what they find to be useful and efficient.

Every phrase is linked to a video so you could perfect the pronunciation.

The most important aspect of learning a new language is to hear it being spoken by natives. Especially since Lebanese is considered as "spoken Arabic".
That is why the advantage of this book is that EVERY word and sentence used, is linked to the video in which it was taught, so you can hear it, and try to master the pronunciation.

Translation and Transliteration

Each English phrase is translated to Lebanese using the Arabic alphabet for those who are Arabic literate, and then in its turn transliterated to the Latin alphabet for those who aren't.

Exercises and Puzzles

In order to help you master the material, there are exercises and puzzle at the end of the book, such as crosswords and word search.

5.0 out of 5 stars A timely book of instruction July 25, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Teacher and author Hiba Najem has been teaching Lebanese Arabic online since 2011 and she understands the apprehension non-Arabic speakers have in adapting to not only a new language but also a new `alphabet' - she minimizes the transition form English to Lebanese Arabic in a course that is not only instructive but also fun! Hiba teaches on the YouTube and this book is a supportive manual for further learning. As she states, `The purpose of this book is not only to organize all the material taught on the channel throughout the many lessons and to provide a written reference for the students who already have watched the videos, but also to offer new students a more structured access to the material where they could learn the dialect and use the videos as additional guides to deepen their understanding. The last section of this book will consist of language puzzles such as crosswords, word search and fill-in-the-blanks that will help you master the material.'

She opens her book with a very informative Transliteration guide - the Arabic letters and their transliteration according to the Lebanese dialect. She then structure her book into the following chapters: Basic Language - Numbers, Days, Colors, Pronouns, Prepositions; Traveling - Airport, Directions, Money, Accommodation, Shopping; Everyday Words and Sentences - introductions, general greetings; Family, friends and relationships - Family, Friends, Love, Emotions; Conjugation - To Have, To Go, To Eat, To Draw, To Want; Miscellaneous - Random Words and Sentences; and Word Puzzles - Printable Puzzles.

When coupled with videos made accessible through YouTube connection within the book, this is a relatively simple way to approach Lebanese Arabic, and with the world growing smaller every day, it is wise for each of use to master a bit of Arabic. This is a very fine introduction to speaking Arabic through the every wise use of Practical sentences, videos, puzzles and quizzes. Grady Harp, July 14

4.0 out of 5 stars Good instructions and reminders September 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Quite helpful for me. Although I must admit: I have not gone to Lebanon to test out my skills, I have found this book a handy tool.

I have dear friends of the family who are of Lebanese (and Syrian) heritage--most of them are the 2nd generation in America, and they remember that their grandparents spoke Lebanese Arabic (usually just called Lebanese, because we're talking family heritage here, not linguistics) around the home. They grew up hearing, and picking up bits and pieces.

But over the years, they've used it less and less, and that has left them missing something. So, when I asked them to help try out a few things from this book, they agreed. It's been fun.

Now, as a basic American, I can't get all the pronunciation right. Far from it. But a few visits with friends and their extended family have a neat new depth thanks to a little learning.

I can't speak to using this Phrasebook cold, trying to learn from nothing, but if you have either a little background of your own or a friend with some, I've found it very, very handy. Being in Kindle format has it on my phone, my tablet, everywhere. Very helpful.

An acquaintance of mine, a Lebanese Jamaica or a Jamaican of Lebanese decent had a conversation with her in front of me and I was taken away with how beautiful Lebanese is.

This phrase book is a good addendum to a 1st and 2nd year study of grammar. Once the basics are down a phrase book like this as well as having someone to converse frequently will make all the difference from a language that's just beautiful to hear but beautiful when conversed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful. October 20, 2014

It's definitely not easy to learn any type of Arabic language, especially for those who are unfamiliar with the Arabic letters.
But somehow this book makes learning the language quite fun, particularly thanks to the access to the video lessons.

A direct link to pronunciation for each sentence might be of greater help. A quite practical book anyhow.
