This review is from: Lebendige Vergangenheit: José Mardones (Audio CD)
Mardones has a huge warm voice which is used with great artistry. The Verdi recordings are treasures.
I happen to be able listen through the old recordings limitations. IMO Mardones' sound compares with anyone elses on record.

Unfortunately, all of the selections on this CD are from the acoustical period
of human recording. Mardones has a huge voice, but little of interest shows through on this disc. He died in 1932, and made an unintestering zarzula recording during the electric period, but the use of the bass voice there, is of little interest musically. IF Mardones recorded arias and songs during the electric period, then these might be of much greater interest to listen too. Conrad Claborne |
