If you are a fan of tenors, The MET or opera in general, you know that Richard Tucker has been treated terribly by his label (CBS/Sony). Thankfully the folks in Europe have partly helped the situation with this issue of his early Columbia sides. This is Tucker at his freshest before the mannerisms that inflict most singers started to take hold of him. Here is hoping that the folks at Preiser Records will also issue his fantastic Cav/Pag from the early 50's and the English-language MET recordings he was involved with. As for sound, I was rather surprised. It is the typical slightly constricted early 50's mono sound, but no pop, crackle or obnoxious tape hiss to detract from the performances. Like many of the Preiser Vergangenheit series, essential to any student of opera or opera singing.

Richard Tucker [1913-1975] was a tenor for the ages; today, he is essentially forgotten, and that's sad. Even in his own day, he never got, nor did he seek, a lot of hype. No stories of erratic behavior, no juicy scandals...he was a decent, God fearing, man, totally devoted to his family. In one sense, he was really an Orthodox Hazan, who sang opera on the side. He worked hard; too hard, after his first heart attack, which eventually did him in. Over the years, his voice matured from lyrico spinto to dramatic...here we get early Tucker, when he was still doing more lyric roles.

This is a superb remastering of records that Tucker did for Columbia from 1947 to 1950. They are representative of the lyric he was singing then ["Rigoletto", for which he was always really too heavy, and the Neopolitan songs], and the dramatic he only did later ["Gioconda", "Aida", "Pagliacci"]. We even get cuts from "Otello", which he never did, and "La Juive" which he never lived to do at The Met.

If you're not old enough to remember Richard Tucker, and you really want to hear a great singer, grab this. It is certainly in no wise close to all he did, but it's a great start. And if you want to be blown away, find one of his Cantorial masterpieces.
