This review is from: Lectures on String Theory (Lecture Notes in Physics) (Hardcover)
This is the best book for an introduction. It treated bosonic string and spinning strings very neatly and will help esp. if you are looking for a way into this field. At the beginning everything is hard, so such a book will help a lot. Witten's book is also very clear but at a more complicated level.
