Much More than An Album of Cover Songs,
By Justin (Connecticut) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Led Zeppelin: This Ain't No Tribute Series (Audio CD)
I have greatly enjoyed this album. These covers were expertly reworked in quite a few different blues styles...from the the slower deep-south-style blues with acoustic guitars and harmonicas to the more jazzy upbeat blues, complete with screaming electric instruments. This album is also a great way to get jump-started finding newer, prodigious blues bands to get into. A couple quick ideas for the critical songs of the album...hear some AMAZING one-man-band acoustic work in 'Custard Pie' by Eric Gales. Hear two very cool versions of 'When the Levee Breaks', one acoustic, the other electric. 'Hey, Hey' by Chris King guaranteed to get you feeling good.

It sounded interesting, and the other reviewers gave some good praise, so I went ahead and bought it.
Ladies and gents, I'm glad I did. Listening to many of the tracks, it's hard to believe they weren't ORIGINALLY blues! The renditions are so pure, so well done -- if you like blues, you'll love this collection. I'm now going to try some of the other "This Ain't No Tribute" series... I hope they're as good!

Blues artists do Led Zeppelin,

Led Zeppelin embodied much of the early blues music into their compositions, and on this recording, the tables are turned, as the blues artists do their interpretations of Zeppelin. Carl Weathersby does an outstanding rendition of "Good Times, Bad Times" and Billy Branch tears up "When the Levee Breaks". A truly enjoyable listen.

When you've listened to so much Led Zeppelin that you couldn't stand the thought of another note, yet the only thing that sounds good is more Led Zeppelin, try giving this a spin instead. My only complaint is that it's too short.
Every track on this CD is rock-solid and and sounds completely original when contrasted to the versions you're used to hearing. I could frame every song on this CD as an artist's own work on their own blues album, yet I can hear the LZ version in each one. It's hard to cover bands like LZ without sounding like an imitation but it sure sounds easy here. If you're into studio-version-only or if you're a total hard rock FREAK, then you might pass. I personally enjoy hearing live variants of studio cuts, and as this album is largely a *blues* tribute, it only adds to the variety and "roots" appeal.

Black & Blue,
This review is from: Led Zeppelin: This Ain't No Tribute Series (Audio CD)
Great music and really rewarding hearing black blues artists brilliantly cover white British rockers. I'm a fan of all the artists involved, including Led Zepplin, but the sense of poetic justice makes this even more enjoyable.
