Biography

Led Zeppelin was the definitive heavy metal band. It wasn't just their crushingly loud interpretation of the blues -- it was how they incorporated mythology, mysticism, and a variety of other genres (most notably world music and British folk) -- into their sound. Led Zeppelin had mystique. They rarely gave interviews, since the music press detested the band. Consequently, the only connection the audience had with the band was through the records and the concerts. More than any other band, Led Zeppelin established the concept of album-oriented rock, refusing to release popular songs from their… Read more

Led Zeppelin are a highly rated British blues-rock outfit and statistically regarded as one of the most successful rock bands of the seventies. They first formed in 1968 from the remaining members of The Yardbirds, and consisted of Jimmy Page (b. 1946, guitar), Robert Plant (b. 1948, vocals), John Paul Jones (b. 1946, bass guitar / keyboards), and John Bonham (1948-1980, drums). They are considered one of the most influential bands in the world, becoming closely associated with the 'album-oriented rock' (AOR) format and progenitors of a style of rock music called 'heavy metal', although the… Read more

History of Zeppelin

1968: The beginning of Led Zeppelin traces back to the British blues-influenced rock band, The Yardbirds. As the band starts to wind down, guitarist, Jimmy Page forms the New Yardbirds along with John Paul Jones, John Bonham and Robert Plant and changes the group’s name to Led Zeppelin.

October 15, 1968: Led Zeppelin performs their first show at the University of Surrey, Guildford in England.

November 13, 1968: Atlantic Records announces its signing of Led Zeppelin without having ever seen them.

January, 1969: Shortly after their first tour, Led Zeppelin releases the group’s debut self-titled album, Zeppelin.

October, 1969: The band releases their second album Led Zeppelin II. This album was the band's first to hit #1 in the U.S., temporarily knocking The Beatles' Abbey Road from the top spot.

December 6, 1969: "Whole Lotta Love”, a track on Led Zeppelin II, enters the Billboard Top 40 singles chart. It remains on the chart for 13 weeks, peaking at #4 and becomes the band's only Top 10 single in the US.

October, 1970: Zeppelin’s third and most eagerly awaited album of 1970, Led Zeppelin III, releases. Initially receiving a lukewarm reception by fans and critics, the album contains two of Led Zeppelin's most well-known songs, "Immigrant Song" and "Since I've Been Loving You".

November, 1971: After the media labels the band as “hyped and overrated”, Zeppelin releases a fourth album featuring an album cover with no indication of a title or the band’s name. However, on the LP label, four symbols were printed representing the four members of the band. This album features hits “Black Dog”, “Rock and Roll” and “Stairway to Heaven”.

March, 1973: Led Zeppelin’s next album, Houses of the Holy, is released featuring hits “The Song Remains the Same” and “D’yer Mak’er”.

March, 1976: Zeppelin’s seventh album, Presence, is released. This album is conceived after Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant sustains serious injuries from a car accident in Rhodes, Greece which postpones a planned 1975-1976 world tour by the band.

October 20, 1976: The band’s first movie documentary, The Song Remains the Same, premieres featuring recordings of three nights of concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1973.
