Tales of the Winter Tour,

Fairport Convention conducts their annual Winter Tour of England through February/March every year. These two CD's document one night of the 2002 Winter Tour at The Anvil Theatre, Basingstoke, England and was recorded on February 23, 2002.This show features the current line-up of fine players; Simon Nicol: vocals & guitars, Dave Pegg: bass guitar, mandolin & vocals, Ric Sanders: violin, Chris Leslie: vocals, bouzouki, violin & mandolin, Gerry Conway; drums & percussion devices. This show features nine selections from the band's then current CD "XXXV", and guest: Anna Ryder is present on a few numbers. (That's her voice on: "The Crowd.") All your Fairport faves are included here such as: "Crazy Man Michael" "Walk Awhile" & "Matty Groves." But of course there are a few surprises mixed in as well, and believe it or don't, there is even a drum solo as a part of this ("Let There Be Drums.") What makes: "On The Ledge" a keeper is that the band was captured live on one of their very best nights of the tour. All song versions on these disk's surpass the studio versions with really amazing playing and spot-on-playing. That said, the sound quality found on these two CD's is fantastic as well. This is one of the best live recordings that I have heard in quite some while. Fairport Convention is still a great, great band forty years young. FIVE STARS!!!
