5.0 out of 5 stars A Kitchen Staple, October 1, 2002

I have tons of cookbooks but this is one of about 5 that never leave the kitchen. The recipes are easy to follow and always turn out well. It is definitely not for the calorie conscious (9 egg yolks for a quart of ice cream!) but everything is delicious! The writing style is simple and homey and the pictures make you want to cook everything immediately.

5.0 out of 5 stars MR. BAILEY IS A CLASSIC!!, January 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Lee Bailey's Country Desserts (Hardcover)
THIS IS A MUST HAVE IF YOU ARE A COLLECTOR OF COOKBOOKS, AND/OR ENJOY BAKING. MR. BAILEY'S BOOKS ARE NOT JUST FOR THE RECIPES, EVEN THOUGH HIS ARE EXCEPTIONAL--ESPECIALLY THE SNICKERDOODLE RECIPE LOCATED IN THIS BOOK--THEY ARE ALSO A FEAST FOR THE SENSES.

IF YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY YOU SHOULD ALSO TRY TO OBTAIN A FEW OF HIS OUT OF PRINT BOOKS, SUCH AS LEE BAILEY'S CITY FOOD, AND LEE BAILEY'S GOOD PARTIES. HIS RECIPES AND INSTRUCTIONS ARE VERY EASY TO FOLLOW. I HAVE NEVER BEEN DISAPPOINTED WITH HIS WORK, AND HIS PHOTOGRAPHER, JOSHUA GREENE, DOES JUSTICE TO ALL THE RECIPES THAT APPEAR.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Staple, July 29, 2008
By

This review is from: Lee Bailey's Country Desserts (Hardcover)
When it comes to desserts-- this is my favorite cookbook. As much as I try to find new sources, I keep coming back to this one. Some of our favorites are the lemon squares, rhubarb pie (though I make it w/ the crust from the apple pie-- as it is the best crust recipe I've found), the sour cream pound cake (usually w/ lemon juice and zest in place of the vanilla), and the thumbprint cookies (I often use coconut in place of nuts to roll the cookies in-- but they're great either way). I find that many other cookbooks are hit or miss, but this one has been the most reliable. Everything I've tried has been either good or great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have had this book for years!, March 1, 2005
I have tried several recipes from this book and not only are they truly old fashioned desserts, every single on of them turns out perfect and they actually look like the picture in the book. Our favorites include the lemon squares, blondies, and devil's food cake! This book is a permanant resident in my kitchen and gets used frequently!

This book is very well organized. I personally love a cookbook with all of the recipes in color photos. The ice cream section has a wide variety to chose from. Not a book for calorie-consciensious,but definitely worth having if you enjoy entertaing.

I wanted to buy this book for a student of mine, it is one of my favorites! I knew it was old and out of print and was very happy to be able to find it at all. When the book arrived it was in PERFECT condition, I almost didn't give it away. The value was amazing, $5.00 for a book that looked new!

5.0 out of 5 stars Calorie Lovers Dream, July 7, 2010
This review is from: Lee Bailey's Country Desserts (Hardcover)
Lee Bailey takes you back into a childhood where calories were necessary to sustain a growing active body. Lee's is a world of wonderful evenings on the porch cranking the handle of a ice cream freezer with anticipation of consuming it contents with a luscious layer cake piled high with thick creamy seven-minute icing.
Once-a-year in today's sedentary world one should indulge with one of his marvelous and easy to create recipes.
If nothing else keep this title near your arm chair to indulge in remembrances of times past and calories lost because you can taste the sweetness from the pictures.
I made the summer pudding with freshly-picked blackberries for the 4th of July feast this year. Of course, it didn't look like his picture and non-fat Cool Whip isn't real whipped cream, but there weren't any leftovers.
