4.0 out of 5 stars A good book marred by lack of proofreading, August 16, 2007
This review is from: Lee Frost's Landscape Photography: How to Take Spectacular Photographs in All Environments (Paperback)
I found Lee Frost's "The A_Z of Creative Photography" a great book for a beginner, and I was eagerly anticipating the release of "Landscape Photography. I was not entirely disappointed. Lee Frost is clearly a very talented landscape photographer, and the book is well organized, with clear explanations of technique, importance of filters (especially grads), composition, and lighting. There are chapters with useful hints for wild country, rivers and lakes, coastal scenery, tropics, and urban environments. One thing I found surprising is how much planning and time goes into shooting the breathtaking images found in the book.

There is a section on equipment, which I did not find all that useful, perhaps because the emphasis is on film, or perhaps because the author does not attach that much importance to the topic. The author gives a nod to digital photography, but this topic is only skimmed over.

More annoying are the numerous typos. Also, the photo captions on a few pages appear to have been swapped. Although the captions mention the type of camera, the lens, and the film used, they usually do not include f-stop or shutter speed information.

But overall, I found the book to be a great introduction to landscape photography, and also enjoyable reading. Lee's photographs alone are worth the purchase price!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, December 23, 2010
This review is from: Lee Frost's Landscape Photography: How to Take Spectacular Photographs in All Environments (Paperback)
Frost does a good job covering a number of aspects of taking compelling landscape photos in this book. The photos in this book are excellent, although often the short text accompanying the photo does not cover much of the technical or aesthetic aspects that makes the photo successful, and instead just discusses the conditions of the shoot or something Frost found interesting about the venue.

I enjoyed the good tips that were shared about equipment (cameras/filters/etc), as well as practical advice about planning a photography trip, and how to take care of your gear in various conditions. There was also a good discussion of light, and how it affects your photographs; some basic tips on composition; as well as other topics like depth of field, white balance, and hyperfocal focusing. These were the best sections of the book.

The latter half of the book discusses various different kinds of landscapes ("classical", "tropical", "urban", etc). You can really sense the enthusiasm and passion Frost has for landscape photography in this part of the book, although there density of useful information was a lot less here. Most of the text just describes various locations, and trivia about the shoot, and the technical information was shallow and repetitive. Nonetheless, the photos were still excellent, and were enjoyable by themselves.

Overall, this is still a great book with lots of information. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for the digital photographer, September 7, 2007

Photomad (Christchurch, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lee Frost's Landscape Photography: How to Take Spectacular Photographs in All Environments (Paperback)
This book is typical of Lee's style of photographic book. Lots of great images all biased toward film usage with medium format and 6x17 cameras. This is what I expected and hoped for.

There is some small references to digital but if you are after technique based digital articles than there are better books elsewhere but if you are after inspiraton and still enjoy film based photography than this book is excellent.

I really like this book and for these reason I would highly recommend it.
