Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Although he's often pigeonholed as a cool alto saxophonist--one of great facility, mind you--this description still seems to ignore Lee Konitz's endless curiosity and ambition. This dense and daring nonet exemplifies Konitz's creative urges, packed as it is with standout players (Jimmy Knepper and Ronnie Cuber lead the pack), complex yet vibrant arrangements, and diverse material. Each member of the four-brass, two-reed frontline gets to flex their bop muscles on Charlie Parker's "Chi-Chi," while Konitz and baritonist Cuber run through some challenging tandem lines over the bubbling harmonics of John Coltrane's "Giant Steps." Sam Burtis's tuba gives punch to the arrangement on the blues "Who You," while on "Struttin' with Some Barbecue," Konitz looses the crew on collective improvisation that would make Louis grin. --Marc Greilsamer

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest jazz album ever!, October 5, 2003
By
Leif Wikfeldt (Gothenburg, Sweden) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lee Konitz Nonet (Audio CD)
This would be one of my "isolated island" records, if i ever end up on one! I was originally interested in this because of the appearence of Ronnie Cuber, who's always been one of my favorite jazz musicians, and on this album he surely burns! The same applies to Lee Konitz himself (who I haven't listened that closely to before) and reatively unknown names like John Eckert. I forgot the other trumpet player's name. It is Joe Shepley? Ayway, the rhythm section is excellent with Kenny Washington on the drums. I can recommend this album to everyone interested in jazz!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the CD -- but No personnel listing or when it was recorded originally-- no thanks to Amazon, January 24, 2012

So this is a great CD, and unfortunately when Amazon produces them with their own CD-Rs, the liner notes never come with much detail other than song titles. No personnel, no recording date. These are essential things that jazz enthusiasts want to know. Now it does say 1997 Chiaroscuro on the back, so I can only assume it was recorded in either 1996 or 97, but can't be for sure.... wish Amazon would do a better job with providing essential info on these CD-R burns.... the same thing happens on the Soul Note catalog recordings they produce ....
