Years ago, I began to eat a hot red oil condiment similar to this, putting a little on rice. Eventually, I found it delightful and was heartbroken when the restaurant serving it went out of business. After a multi-year search for similar taste, I finally settled on Lee Kum Kee Chiu Chow Chili Oil! This stuff has an infinite shelf life, brilliant and powerful flavor, without being too burning hot! I had been hunting for sources; now I am happy to see Amazon brings it to my door!

This sauce has a wonderful mix of salt, garlic, chili, and that "je ne sais quoi" of ground dried shrimp or something.

My kids spoon it generously into our stir fry dishes--hot but not too hot.

Lots of restaurants around here--Cantonese dim sum places--make their own versions, but none is better than this simple jarred sauce.

Here in Oakland, CA, we have an old Hong Kong/Cantonese Chinatown where a couple grocers usually carry it, and our suburban-style full-line Asian supermarket, Ranch 99 Market, also stocks it. As you can tell, we find it worth searching for.

I too used to buy and eat a similar tasting chili oil on rice! I believe it was called "Chili Sa-te" and was a Vietnamese product but, I think, made by Huy Fong Foods. It was in a plastic jar with a green top and it was easily my favorite pantry food item. I have been looking for it to no avail for SO long. In fact, yesterday, I was on-line trying to find it and could not. I have had such a craving for it that I drove to a Chinese supermarket I know and was disappointed not to see it - but I thought Chiu Chow looked similar. I really LOVE it and am so happy that I found it. Anyone else know what the "old" stuff is that I liked?

I first tasted this stuff in Paris, when visiting my sister. For the next few years, I looked and looked and looked but never found it in shops. There was a Lee Kum Kee fair at the Chicago Yaohan, even then they didn't have it. I don't why the stuff's so hard to find. I looked and looked and tasted and tasted chili oils from all sorts of different brands and from every Chinese restaurant I came across, nothing tasteed the same. Now it seems it's available from Amazon - how nice!
