These filters are for use between the light source and the negative or transparency. They are available in the same color and density ranges as the color compensating filters. Please note: only color correction quality filters should be used in the image forming beam.The viewing kit can be used to evaluate the color balance of a transparency or print. Each kit contains six cards one for each compensating filter color: cyan, yellow, magenta, red, green and blue. For each color there are filter pieces of the most useful densities, arranged in sequence around a central clear filter. The slide or transparency should be viewed through the cards enabling the correct filtration to be identified.

So, I bought this product because I was taking a color class. It is possible to rent them through the school but for the amount of time that I planned to be using it, it was worth it to just buy my own. I looked at the local photo supplies store two blocks from my class building and the set was 10 dollars more! Ordered it off amazon and it was at my dorm within two days of the purchase. This set of filters is perfect for anyone who is taking color photography, and plans to be printing their own images. Instead of just guessing as to what colors I need I am able to accomplish assignments to their fullest without having to use a set of filters used by generations of photo major students before me. They are certain to hold up until color printing no longer exsists, or my entire college career, whichever comes first. Lee is the only company to still really sell this set so finding the best price in a monopolized market seemed difficult, but this purchase was well worth it!
