Many motherboards have unused USB headers, and you need a product like this to make use of them. Rather than buying a hub, check to see if your motherboard has additional USB headers being unused.

If so, buy a product like this and install it.

This particular product comes with the common double-row pin layout plug, where there are 5 pins on one side and 4 pins parallel. This is the common type you will find on most motherboards.

I installed three of these in the machine I just built. They all function perfectly and they're certainly cheap, but the USB ports themselves are made with very loose tolerances and when plugging a USB cable in, the fit is not tight at all, to the point that an accidental tug on the cable could easily pull it out.

Motherboards should (and used to) include these, so you could wire up every potential USB port they offered to the back plate of your PC. If you wanted to, you could unscrew the connectors and place them elsewhere convenient, if the cabinet were made appropriately.

Cabinets SOMETIMES anticipated your needs, often realizing that most motherboards featured 2 such connectors and either supplied 2 plates like this, or a double-density version with 4 ports on the backside like this: 4-PORT USB Pci Bracket

Then of course, there's other accessories no longer included like eSATA connectors, peripheral clips, IEEE 488 connectors, Digital Music Out (SPDIF), and so on.

These often went unconnected/junked/trashed/unused/ignored/disabled so often (or often enough) that nowadays, you must pay for the ones you want... and the others won't be found, saving the environment from so much wasted plastic and steel every PC, motherboard, and case that is sold. It adds up fast.

This particular connector arrived in the mail, no worse for harm - well wrapped against damage. Its screws fastening the connectors to the plate were loose, however - so I plugged a USB cable into each before tightening them up, to make sure that once installed, I'd have proper alignment (they had wiggle room).

Fastening them to my motherboard was a chore, but this was fault of how the motherboard did not have one of those NICE sockets to plug into, not this product. I (and you) have to be careful to insure proper alignment of the pins and that it is not offset by a row or column when plugging it in.

This is my second order to HDE. I am really impressed this time with the speedy service since it comes directly from Hong Kong. With that aside, what pleased me the most is that the device works really well. Plugged it into my motherboard and it was able to recognize my flash drive almost immediately. The data cord is especially thick and well made. The usb ports are not too bad either. As one reader commented that the four screws used to connect the ports to the metal panel adapter are way too short and can be easily stripped with rough handling. The solution is to use longer screws.

I had intended to modify this adapter and use it on the front panel of my son's computer. However, I found that that the cable was way too short to reach the center of my motherboard. Otherwise, he will have to settle having his usb ports located on the rear of the case which is what there were designed to be. A really fine product for the purpose and price and definitely improves the efficiency of any desktop computer.

I recently purchased an ASRock N68C-S UCC motherboard from another website and found that the very first USB port on the back panel had intermittent connection issues.

Getting a replacement these days is a total gamble, could get a better one or one with similar/worse issues - and then be stuck with it. Too many variables to consider just to get a USB port to work...

Best solution: USB bracket. The installation is simple, just pop it in, plug it into the mobo. The cable was long enough to reach to the opposite side of the board with a little extra slack. Windows Vista SP2 had no problem recognizing and installing basic drivers. I got mine from the seller HDE to make sure I didn't receive someone else's knockoff.

I have my mouse and keyboard plugged into it.

I'd urge anyone with bad USB ports to try one of these instead of chucking your mobo into a landfill; there's just no reason for trashing the whole thing for such a small problem.

I noticed many motherboards do not come with enough usb 2 ports. This is especially true of inexpensive motherboards that feature usb 3. The issue with many usb 3 ports is that they are not natively supported, so that they do not function until the operating system has booted up, and loaded the usb 3 drivers. This prevents those ports for being used to navigate bios, or to boot from.

These are great for utilizing those usb 2 headers on your motherboard. Being mounted via pci bracket also makes them rather strong, whereas some motherboards will stack usb ports four ports high, resulting in lots of flex.

I've had only one issue. Out of the 5 I've ordered, one of them had stripped screws. Though unfortunate, these are very cheap products. A really cheap solution is attach the ports to the bracket with screws and nuts.
