4.0 out of 5 stars First-class reference work - though stained by poor index, August 18, 2005
By
This review is from: Lees' Loss Prevention in the Process Industries, Third Edition: Hazard Identification, Assessment and Control (3 Vols Set) (Hardcover)
This is an authoritative 3-volume reference work which covers basically everything about risk analysis.
However, there is a snag which seriously limits the practical day-to-day usage of this comprensive first-class piece of work with thousands of pages of detailed and accurate info. For mysterious reasons, the subject index is not as exhaustive as the in the earlier version. In the 2nd ed. the subject index ran 214 pages and could probably easily be expanded. In the 3rd ed. it has been curtailed (!) to a meagre 41 pages.

It is such a shame, if not quite unforgiveable, considering the very nature of a reference work (supposed to be referenceable through the index). The hefty price tag should also warrant a quality index.

With this shortcoming, the 2nd edition will remain on the shelf in the foreseeable time.

The practical usage of this book would be greatly enhanced if a Google-type search facility was made available on the Elsevier website providing a page reference to the printed edition.
