one of the best games ever made, i was actually getting nervous and scared playing a game! at first it made me jump on a few occasions, the sounds really help make this game great. you can hear the zombies and monsters before you see them. just knowing that they are nearby and could strike at any second. its very dark most of the time which also makes it scary. i actually like this game more than left 4 dead to as far as the campaign goes. left 4 dead 2 is an action game where as this is suspense. provides hours upon hours of gameplay trying to get all the steam achievements. survival mode is fun, versus is wayyy better on l4d2 though. love the genre and this game. characters say funny things and its a real thrill to play. not kid friendly. very gory, however there is a way to lower the violence. leave a comment if you want to know how or look it up online. also i have it for the pc not xbox360

In my opinion this is the game that gave rise to all the current zombie games on the market.

The pace is very fast, especially when playing with other people online...which is really where this game shines. It has a single player component, which is nice but really only beneficial in learning the maps so that when you play with others you are an asset.

The various modes are quite challenging, but lots of fun. The levels are well designed and the atmosphere is great. The finales in particular are loads of fun, though frustrating when you are just about to escape and don't make it....however that is also what keeps you coming back for more.

The characters are well designed and the conversation provides some laughs amongst the horrors your team faces to surive.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best,in Any year!, August 14, 2011

Re-issued in 2009 as a game of the year edition(the same year as its follow up successor LFD2),this game, for my money has got to be the most addictive but fun game in many, many years. If you like First Person Shooters(FPS)then boy this is the baby for you.
You install the game and set up an online account with Steam, which is very easy to do.I have several Steam games in play already so it was just a matter of installing, logging in as usual, then playing.Steam is excellent in their service as they are constantly on top of all games adding updates as you go(no charge of course). They are also constantly tweaking both Left for Dead games as you can see minor changes in your environment from time to time.
This game gives you six campaigns which you can play online with others,a versus other players mode,a survivor mode and a single player mode. The L4D world is based in reality but at the same time is quite fantastical. It's a Zombie killing playground to be sure but it is populated with unusual mutants like a Smoker,a hunter, the Tank, the Spitter and others. You just never know what will be around the next corner as you ply your way through the Zombie populated streets. You have a choice of playing in the guise of four different players,Francis,Bill,Zoey and Louis and you can choose whatever name you want AND avatar pic you want;one of theirs or one of yours.
There are four different levels easy, normal, advanced and expert to play. The games' first level starts you on a rooftop with your three companions and you/they have to fight their way off the roof to a safe house down below. There are usually about four different excursions within each of the six campaigns you undertake in this game and your destination and purpose is to survive to reach the next safe house. The last excursion to finish each level is what I call a stand and deliver. You are all in a defensive posture in or near a building which you must defend until your final rescue/extraction arrives, either by land or by air. There is an excellent variety of weapons to choose from with lots of extras to carry like pipe bombs and Molotov cocktails for some extra damage.
As I said this is one of the most addictive games you will ever play as there's no end to the variety of situations you find yourself in.And this world is surprisingly expansive, which means there are a plethora of doors you can open, windows to go through, buildings to explore, tunnels to get lost in,etc, etc.
The downside is minor but there is one. When playing multi player you will from time to time run into some folks who are definitely a little too serious;OK,WAY too serious. They've been playing a while and expect everyone to play THEIR way and up to their speed. They can be nasty. Also you will run into those that just like to create havoc for the sake of creating havoc like shooting other players to disable them, etc. You know silly and childish stuff. You can call a vote and knock someone out of the game if they bother you but you have to have a majority vote to do so and the vote won't always swing your way.Now this isn't a regular occurrence but it is something to be aware of.If it happens do not let it get you down;either try to kick the offender out if it gets that far or just leave and either join another game or start one yourself. What can one say,the internet is what it is and jerks are everywhere,be aware and act accordingly.
Left for Dead gets high marks all around. Its addictive game play to its great and imaginative story lines to its' fabulous graphics which spell"Winner" all the way.Get your Zombie killing playground today!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great game but STEAM still sucks, February 21, 2012

This review is from: Left 4 Dead - Game of the Year Edition (DVD-ROM)
Okay . . . I'm a Zombie Fanboy. I love anything to do with Zombies. Killing Zombies was the only thing that got me to role the dice with STEAM.

If ya want a review read the five star reviews. It's bloody, violent and almost impossible to survive on Expert mode.

What I want to talk about is STEAM. Okay so I set up my account . .. a new one . . . and install STEAM which then starts downloading the game. Will of course at 79% of the download completed it stopped at 79% and wouldn't budge. And the kb/sec rate was stuck at 709. Task manager showed STEAM not responding. Well I figured I just got it from behind from STEAM again and would have to just use the DVD for target practice. But wait!!!!!!! Despite what STEAM said, the game had completely downloaded and was installed. Dumb luck that . . . cause I killed STEAM after waiting about 30% for it to do something.

Well I got my Zombie game and I still hate STEAM. But its here to stay. At least I don't have to put the DVD in to play. STEAM and everyone who works for STEAM can kiss my . . . . And sit on it and spin.

Hope amazon doesn't delete this. I just really hate STEAM.

3.0 out of 5 stars Repetitive cooperative first person zombie shooter with an emphasis on cooperation for your survival, January 2, 2012
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Left 4 Dead - Game of the Year Edition (DVD-ROM)
The zombie apocalypse is here and that's the entire story you need to know in this cooperative first-person shooter and all the story you're ever told. You play as 1 of 4 survivors (Zoey the college student, Bill the war veteran, Francis the biker, Louis the IT guy). The character doesn't seem to matter, it's just a different voice and skin. They will talk to alert you of things like health, weapons, reloading and where you should go next. Left 4 Dead is geared toward online multiplayer, but you can play solo through the game where your computer partners are competent enough, but need to be guided by you. Instead of online multiplayer where the other players seem to just run right through each level.

The controls are simple, point and click to shoot like any first person shooter, right mouse button is for melee for when foes swarm around you and they will. You have a long range weapon (shotguns, oozies, assault rifles and so on), a pistol (or 2) with limitless ammo, a medipack to restore your health or someone else's, pain pills that will temporarily give you a health boost and finally an explosive thrown weapon like a flaming cocktail or pipe bomb. You can jump or crouch for better weapon accuracy and that's it. The combat feels very limited because of this.

The big drawing point to the game is some sort of smart engine called the director that will generate random zombies to come at you, so no play through is the same twice. Such as a zombie that was at point A of your first play through might be a wall of zombies or no zombies, or a female zombie in your next play through. These zombies will race toward you after a few moments of shuffling their feet that might result in your terror, but an entire game of zombies running to you gets old very quickly. Zombies can climb up areas, go under truck trailers and the animations are good in general. Weapons and ammo scattered outside of safe rooms will not be in the same place twice.

The game is broken into campaigns and levels that you can access any one at any time. The campaigns are brief and really take you out of the action when you need to load a new campaign after completing one. The levels have good atmosphere, dark, spooky, but it gets old very quickly. Most every level feels the same with generic buildings, generic exteriors, generic trucks.

Between the levels are safe rooms. Leave a safe room and make it to the next safe room to cap off the level. Then at the end of the level, you see your score and how you did against the other players. Who killed the most zombies, who took the most damage. Stuff like that.

To be honest it's not that good. It feels very one dimensional. Within the first few levels, you've seen all the game has to offer. You will quickly see all of its small variety of enemies zombies run straight at you, witches that stay huddled until you put a light on them, stalkers pounce on you until you are saved, smokers use a tongue to strangle you until you are saved and explode smoke, exploders that vomit on you and tanks that can throw you and take a giant amount of punishment. You will really need to rely on others for survival. The computer players will be very willing to help you, but the players in multiplayer may not be as willing or can't when you've been left behind or gone ahead.

That's it. The game isn't very long and for a game that touts its random enemy generator, it doesn't make me want to replay the game again and again. Combat is simple, enemy variety is lacking, but the game plays very smooth. Essentially left for dead is about mowing down tons of zombies and if that's your thing, this is the game for you. If you need puzzles in your FPS or weapon depth, it's not for you.

Greeeeeeat game! It makes you feel like you're in a real zombie apocalypse. Reminds me of so many zombie movies, and I love zombie movies! I also like the online player mode, it is so cool, it's like you are the last 4 people alive on earth fighting for survival! So fun. I also like it when the zombies come running at you, and how their heads get blown off, just like in the movies! This has got to be one of the best zombie games out there today!

Left 4 Dead will forever be my favorite zombie apocalypse game. And even though Left 4 Dead 2 may be better I still think that this game has a great plot, fun weapons, decent graphics, and relatively few bugs. I have gotten years of fun out of this game and although all games eventually get old, this one is still fun for me and my friends.

Would highly reccomend this game as well as Left 4 Dead 2.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun, blasting away zombies!, August 29, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Left 4 Dead - Game of the Year Edition (DVD-ROM)
Left 4 Dead is a great zombie apocalypse FP shooter game that is largely geared towards online multi-player play over single player campaign.

I've played through all the single-player campaigns and done some online gaming for this game.

In the single-player mode, you can select any level of any one of the campaigns to play on or play through them at in order. The gist of this game is pretty basic, you and four survivors must shoot your way through a devastated zombie-infested terrain to reach an eventual rescue. You'll have to shoot your way through hundreds of brain-dead zombies as well as unique creatures who are smart and hard to kill as well as sudden hordes of zombies that rush at you from every single direction.

What I like about the single player levels are that your AI-controlled teammates are smart and will do a good job of working together. They won't, however, use any of the bombs, so be sure to collect them before they do.
The levels are also well designed and you are really immersed in a world dying due to the zombie apocalypse.

What I dislike is that you don't really have to do anything unique in any of the levels except for the last one. You just have to get from point A to point B, which is fine but the game can get mundane after a while.

As I said, this game is geared mostly towards online multiplayer play, which it does very well. You have a lot of options here too, which is nice, especially being able to play as any one of the special creatures.

Overall, this is a really fun game and anyone who enjoys the horror genre and/or zombies will love this game.
