5.0 out of 5 stars Wet Willie Wails!, July 10, 2003

Thomas Comiskey (Out in the toolies) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Left Coast Live (Audio CD)
I saw Wet Willie live about a half dozen times back in the 70s -

They are one of the best live acts I have ever seen -- they always used to put on a helluva show.

"Left Coast Live" is a classic -- the other live album they did --"Drippin' Wet" (recorded about 1970) is also a classic -- in fact, I like "Drippin'" better than "Left Coast Live"

I listen to either one of them and I'm a kid in my 20's again --
lots of good memories.

"Left Coast Live" is good stuff. Buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars hidden gem, August 21, 2000
This review is from: Left Coast Live (Audio CD)
This Wet Willie recording came along after several excellent studio recordings. While not quite as strong as Dixie Rock or The Wetter the Better, the guys more than proved their ability to wander out of the studio and jam. They were definetly not your average southern rock band. No No No and Teaser which were staples from the Wetter lp still sound fresh and Grits Ain't Groceries was much funkier than other well known white soulsters. Everything That You Do is one song that never got its due although this overblown live version is not nearly as good as the studio version. This would certainly be a good overview for someone just discovering this band. Now if they will just release Mannorisms.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best, July 28, 2011

At the time of writing, I'm shocked to see that this classic album is out of print, and going for absurd sums of money. A great album, but there is no need to pay outrageous prices for it. That said, this is, in my opinion, one of the best live albums ever. Wet Willie put on an absolutely smokin' performance. Tight, funky band as always, and lead singer Jimmy Hall is in prime form, belting out the soulful and bluesy songs. I owned this on album back in the day, but I'm thankful the CD finally came out, with a bunch of bonus tracks to boot. Good job guys. Now someone bring this gem back in print!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ricky Hirsch and Jimmy Hall Rockin' in L.A., January 1, 2008
This review is from: Left Coast Live (Audio CD)
Yup, this album (CD) rocks, but it is the blues that stands out here. Jelly-Jelly which is a twist on Macon Hambone Blues (from the Drippin' Wet LP), features Ricky Hirsch blistering that Les Paul and Jimmy Hall's barely-legal verbiage. I know a few chicks that took their panties off and willfully handed them over after hearing that song. And then Lucy Was In Trouble seals the deal with Jimmy and Ricky blending (vs. trading) licks with that sax and guitar. Both songs - very much the blues - ROCK! But to be fair, all the songs on the CD are great, while any one is worth the price of a standard CD.

This price is a "collector's ransom" which, at the time of purchase, I was happy to pay. However, as great as this CD is, I gotta tell ya: Save some bucks and get it at iTunes for about one-fifth the price. Drippin' Wet too!

5.0 out of 5 stars best live wet willie cd, October 17, 2011

I actually bought this CD after I had purchased several other Wet Willie CDs and refrained because I already had all the songs on other CDs. But then Jimmy Hall came to my area, just 20 miles from me and was at the Blind Willie Blues Festival. He was the lead singer for Wet Willie and has done a couple of blues CDS in recent years. After seeing and hearing him in person I immediately looked for anything live I had missed and found this cd. I loved the live feeling of this CD and the songs are just a bit different than the same versions on their other albums.(well CDs, you can tell I am old.) Jimmy always seems to sing his heart out, wide open and puts it all out there. He still was the same this year in May at the Blind Willie Blues Festival. Of course he closed with Keep On Smilin.
