A wonderful disc from LA's most innovative pianist, October 6, 2000
This review is from: From the Left Edge (Audio CD)
Vicki Ray is a chameleon in the best sense of the word. Whether she is playing Schubert song cycles, classical piano repertoire, or newly-comssioned works, her playing is always clean, brilliant, and passionate. This disc is no exception. Each of the works on this disc were written specifically for her with a result that truly reflects Ms. Ray's personality: fresh, lively, and enthusiastic. Every work is impeccably recorded and the piano sound is marvelous. Personal favorites among these works include Don Crockett's Pilgrimage (an extremely difficult work which Vicki tosses off while adding a wonderful jazzy spin) and Stephen Hartke's bouncy Piano Sonata. A fabulous disc for lovers of Post-Modern LA piano music.
