Stellar Live Performance!, August 16, 2005

This is an all-too-short set which seems to get better with each track. The first three selections are trio tracks which had become standards by Red over the years. Even though they have appeared on earlier albums, this is a fresh approach. Red plays like he's still in his prime, retaining the style he established in the 50's while losing nothing in his appeal as a hard bop pianist. A particular favorite of mine is "Please Send Me Someone To Love", where Red really shows his blues roots.
Things seem to get even better with the addition of Leo Wright, a first rate bop oriented alto saxist. A terrific rendition of "Body And Soul" is followed by a positively burning "Bags Groove". "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" closes out the set, probably a request since this was recorded in one of the best jazz clubs in San Francisco at that time.
Special mention should be made of the excellent sound on this recording. Considering it was "live", someone took a lot of care to ensure a dynamite sound quality!
This is a recording that when I close my eyes, I am there! If I had that kind of music locally, I would sit there.....and drink...and listen.....and think I'd died and gone to heaven!

If you love Red Garland's piano style, and are looking at this album because it was recorded late in his career, and thinking that it would be good to hear a more mature Red - forget it! Red is not bad, though not up to his old 1950's class of playing, but the tracks with altoist Leo Wright totally destroy this album. The liner notes say that Leo just happened to be passing by, and Red asked him to join them for the recording. It is a shame for us that Leo did not just keep on walking. He tries to emulate John Coltrane's playing, without having even a quarter of the talent Coltrane had in his little finger! Do yourself a favour and give this CD a miss!
