The fundamental problem with this product is that it is not sturdy enough to do the job. Instead of working easily, the two parts spread apart and the cutter doesn't completely cut into the lid. Result: can is not fully open. Heavier gauge metal in the two major parts would solve the problem for a few cents more per item. Tilting the handle down can help minimize the problem but it shouldn't take special skills or body English to operate a simple can opener.

I gave this can opener to my left-handed, red-color-loving mother and she really likes it.
I knocked a star off because when the can opener arrived there were some burrs near the handle one twists to operate the opener. I had to take a file and remove the burrs to avoid cuts while using. I (and you too!) should not have had to do this. After modifications - no further issues.
