Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This highly informative work describes one anthropologist/collector's holdings of Alaskan Eskimo and Canadian Inuit artifacts. The publication is at once unusual yet valuable because the collector herself is the author of the catalog: Ray turns nearly 50 years of ethnographic investigation into lyric memoir. Objects from her collection range from everyday, utilitarian items to aesthetically sensitive stone carvings. Ray's extensive knowledge of these works brings a new dimension to how readers can understand art production in the Arctic. She discusses tourist goods and their economic importance and is equally adept at tracing key developments in print and doll making, basketry, sewing, picture writing, and scrimshaw carving. A rich portrait of indigenous life in the far north emerges, making this catalog an insightful addition to the growing literature on Eskimo and Inuit material culture. For academic and specialized collections.?Paula A. Baxter, NYPL

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Inspirational, March 29, 2000

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: A Legacy of Arctic Art (Hardcover)
I came across this book by accident, and what a happy accident! I read it like a novel that I couldn't put down. If you are interested in the subject of native art, Alaska, or are just fascinated with cultural histories in general, you will enjoy this book. It is informative, educational, and feeds the passion for the simple beauty that exists in certain parts of the world like the Alaskan territories. In addition it has inspired and informed me to better plan my future trips to the area. Ray is real, and the book is beautiful with many pictures and descriptions of interesting facts and places. If you are planning a trip to Alaska, this is a book to have. Also described in her book is how to tell the difference between real and fraudulent art. If you plan to collect any pieces, this knowledge would be invaluable. This is one to keep.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shipper is quicker than Amazon, September 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Legacy of Arctic Art (Hardcover)
I ordered this book on the 11 th of September and received it on the 14th. When I went to the Amazon to check on the status of the rest of the order, Amazon hadn't even shipped yet. Amazon is getting worse as time goes by. The sellers that sell on amazon are making Amazon look like armatures. This seller is Coleman Biblio. The book is what I expected as far as content and is in better condition than advertised.
