Book Description

August 1, 1995
Legacy of the Dog is the finest, most comprehensive photographic guide to dog breeds ever published. The beauty and majesty of over 200 breeds are dramatically presented in more than 900 full-color images by acclaimed photographer Tetsu Yamazaki, whose superb work also appeared in Chronicle Books' best-selling volume, Legacy of the Cat.

Page after page features prize-winning dogs of every shape, size, and color, including all 134 breeds currently recognized by the American Kennel Club, as well as a fascinating selection of breeds rarely seen in other dog guides. A glossary and an index round out this invaluable treasury for pet enthusiasts and professional dog breeders alike.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

...Legacy of the Dog covers fewer breeds (about 200) but is better organized. The table of contents lists seven standard categories (herding, working, sporting, hound, terrier, toy, nonsporting) and an alphabetical list of the breeds included in each category. There is a brief discussion of the history of domestic dogs, which include the characteristics of the groups chosen. Group charts display all the breeds listed in each group, making comparison very easy. Most breeds have a double-page spread with exceptional photographs (taken by the author over a three-year period) and very brief descriptions. Since Yamazaki is a photographer and not a vet, his book's emphasis is obviously on photography. One also questions some of Yamazaki's observations on the breeds themselves. For example, in a discussion of Border Collies, he remarks that "it is also well suited as a household pet,"... Both titles are highly recommended for the quality and quantity of photos...Edell Marie Schaefer, Brookfield P.L., Brookfield, Wis.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Reference Book for Dog Lovers Everywhere!, March 28, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Legacy of the Dog: The Ultimate Illustrated Guide to Over 200 Breeds (Paperback)
If you are a dog lover, and would like to learn more about particular dog breeds, this book is excellent! It includes AKC Registered dogs, as well as a whole lot of other breeds. The pictures are beautiful, and the format is easy to read and understand. Also, if you are not familiar with dog terminology-rat tail-brindle (a color)-this book provides an excellent glossary. One of my favorite features us the way the group's members (ex: herding, sporting, etc.) have the pictures of ALL the dogs so you know what the book has at a glance. I also LOVE the way they show you what the colors are by taking a picture of them and putting them in little boxes. They also define pictorally the body parts of a dog, head and face types, eyes, ears, and tail types. Overall, this book is the best I have seen! I'd recommend this book to ANYone, dog lover or not, to learn about the dogs...Happy Reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely photographs ..., May 20, 2001

This review is from: Legacy of the Dog: The Ultimate Illustrated Guide to Over 200 Breeds (Paperback)
If you're looking for a book with lovely photographs of lots of dogs ... this is the perfect book ... There are over 200 colour images, each breed is represented by several photographs ... Especially like the fact that the age of the dogs are also mentioned ... It's been produced with typical Japanese attention to small details ... the pictures are well taken and reproduced, images sharp & colours true ... the paper quality and binding good ...

However ... if you are looking for pictures & INFORMATION on the breeds themselves ... then this book might disappoint somewhat ... We found breed information to be rather sparse ... its not going to assist very much as a guide to finding a suitable breed ... For breed information try some other books that Amazon keep in stock (eg. Barron's Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds)...

But then ... this book doesn't hold itself out to be anything more than a photographic record and general guide to dog breeds ... so 5 stars

Good book to place on the coffee table, to keep visitors visually entertained while you get the tea & cookies ready ...

This is a must have book for dog lovers. We continue to find the information in the book interesting after referencing the book for over two years now. We keep finding little details on various breeds that we pass along to friends and family to help them with their decisions concerning dog ownership. It really is a great collection of pictures and information. It also makes a great gift!
